1. Shielded arc welding is a fusion process where heat is obtained from an electric arc which is formed between a base metal and an electrode.
  • 2. Some safety precautions are:
    • A) Don\'t strike arc until helmet is in place
    • B) Wear proper clothing
    • C) Hold electrode by insulated handle
    • D) Proper ventilation
    • E) Avoid welding near combustable material
    • F) Always wear safety glasses
    • G) Never stand in water when welding
    • H) Never weld on closed conainers
  • 3. Hold the elctrode at a 15 degrees travel angle and either tap or strike an arc then position electrode 1/8 inch from metal.

4. Some basic welds are Butt, Tee, Lap V, and positions are Flat, Horizontal, Vertical and Overhead.
  • 5. Some equipment is:
          • A) Grinder E) Chipping Hammer
          • B) Helmet F) Clothes

  • 7. An electrode is a metal rod coated with Flux the numbers on the rod stand for 601 1 -
  • 60 = 60,000 lbs per square inch
  • XX 1 = Position 1 =All 2 = Flat and Horizontal 3 = Flat
  • XXX 1 = Polarity
  • 1,3,4,8=AC or DC Reverse 2 = AC or DC straight 0 = DC Reverse

8. Metal should be cleaned of oil, paint, rust, and ground to bevel if over 1/4".
  • 9. Cutting is done by turning amps up 150% and pushing rod through metal.
  • 10. The amp setting is determined by the rod size and metal thickness
  • 11. The size of rod used is based on the thickness of metal.
