List of guidelines used to prevent the spread of infection

By law, healthcare professionals must follow Standard Precautions

Main mode of transmission is through bodily fluids

Healthcare facilities must provide PPEs

Enforce rules of no food or drink

Proper signs must be posted as needed

Must consider ALL bodily fluids as potentially infectious

Barriers include gloves, gown, mask

Required to know when to wear what

Wear when splashing or spray of bodily fluids may occur

Wear during certain types of isolation

Wear during certain types of sterile procedures (Ex. = surgery)

Ex. – delivery of baby, dental procedures, ER, Surgery

Wash hands after accidental contact with bodily fluids

Wash hands before/after glove use

Wear PPEs as needed

Handle soiled linens away from skin/clothing

Disinfect equipment according to facility policy

Dispose sharp objects in needle box

Treat all soiled linen as potentially infectious
