  2. Building Energy Monitoring System • Motivation • Accurate energy consumption monitoring of a building’s electric infrastructure, is one of the key issues to achieve an energy-saving or energy efficient building. • The wireless Sensor monitoring system is widely used to new buildings and the existing buildings. These may avoid the high cost of integrated wiring and re-fixing after the update.

  3. Building Energy Monitoring System • Solution: • This sensor networks consist of hundreds of nodes needs to be able to self-organize to provide a reliable wireless network. • BEM system monitoring the Energy consumption, the engry information is recorded and processed in real-time for energy stability diagnosis and consumption assessment. • Totally at least 5 millions nodes needed in Shanghai in next 5 years.

  4. WSN for Public Security Patrol There are many high population density rendezvous in modern city, such as shopping mall, subway platform, airport hall etc. To keep the safety of people in above places, the requirements of public security patrol have emerged. The main traffic types include voice and data. Each patrol team has a leader (H), and several members (M). Every member could directly communicate with leader, also communicate with other members in his communication range.

  5. WSN for Park Management System • Sensor networks are natural candidates for parking management systems because the sensor network can accurately monitor the status of each parking space. Moreover, WSNs have an advantage over wired sensor network that the wireless one can be deployed in existing parking lots without installing the cables for network and electricity to reach each sensing node. • Each parking space in the parking lot has a sensor node capable of detecting a vehicle via magnetic sensor (or ultrasonic sensor) (left figure). All the sensor nodes in the parking lot form a highly reliable local sensor network. Gateway nodes are used to connect sensor network to local area network (mobile communication network, etc.). The architecture of system is shown in right figure.

  6. Even in Shanghai, at least 1,000,000 nodes are expected soon !

  7. WSN for Border Control and Virtual Fences • The objective of sensor network anti-intrusion system is to provide advanced and high security level perimeter alerting and intrusion blocking facilities for important, vital, or restricted regions, areas and/or buildings. The features for this application are: low false alarming rate, low target-miss probability, Instant event response, Automatic warning mechanism, Full surveillance coverage • WSN networks are widely used for airports in China

  8. WSN for Border Control and Virtual Fences Sensor nodes in the network are equipped with different types of sensors to detect various intrusion events which originate from ground, underground, and even low-altitude airspace. Different types of sensors have different capabilities in sensing and detecting targets and events. Sensor nodes in the network are organized in an ad-hoc or hierarchically clustered. Which is applied on airports (over 1000k nodes are required soon)

  9. WSN for Power Transmission Monitoring Potential Market Power tower monitoring system: 7 nodes/ tower, Hydropower dam monitoring system price: 10,000 nodes/ dam Totally 55 million nodes needed!

  10. WSN for Management of Medical Devices in Hospitals • Managing small medical devices is critical as they are directly related with the care for patients. Managing includes not only tracking the devices physical locations, but also their status, e.g., repaired, disinfected, maintenance records, availability/schedule, and so on. To minimize the risk for the patients, the devices have to be accessible and in good condition. The infrastructure of this application is shown in the figure below. • To attach miniaturized sensor nodes to medical devices and to build up an anchor network. The nodes on the devices are always wirelessly connected with one or more anchor nodes. A user’s request for the position and state of a dedicated device sent to the network will cause the network to generate the information and to send it back to the user.

  11. The WSN system: 10,000 nodes/ hospital,

  12. The Major Modification Requirement from these Application • Beacon Scheduling • TDMA Scheduling • GTS Extension • Frequency Shift • Multiple-Channel selection All of these Requirement are presented in original ones.
