  1. Spacecraft Plasma Interaction Guidelines and Handbook D.J.Rodgers (QinetiQ), A.Hilgers (ESA/ESTEC), D.Heynderickx and J. Demol (BIRA/IASB)

  2. Guidelines and Handbook - Overview • Background & aims • Table of Contents • Publishing Scenario • Architecture • Demo

  3. ESA’s co-ordinated Spacecraft Plasma Interaction activities European Co-operation on Space Standardisation SPIS ECSS SPINE Spacecraft plasma interaction simulation Spacecraft plasma interaction network in Europe Guidelines Materials characterisation Spacecraft plasma interaction guidelines and handbook

  4. Guidelines and Handbook - background • Arose from the ECSS Spacecraft charging standard • Formal standards are legal documents • There are other de-facto standards (e.g. NASA handbooks) • There are many important effects that do not lead to requirements • As well as requirements, there is a need for guidance • on how to avoid plasma-induced hazards. • what the requirements mean in common situations • what codes are available • what test facilities there are

  5. Guidelines and Handbook - aims • To bring together, from open literature • guidelines and requirements • equations • data • tabular information and graphs • To promote the use and sharing of resources in Europe. • Links to simulation resources • Links to testing facilities • Hardcopy and interactive versions • QinetiQ and BIRA/IASB

  6. Introduction General plasma parameters Sheath and Wakes Guidelines Active electrostatic systems: (Tethers and electric propulsion) Surface Charging Guidelines Internal Charging Guidelines Solar Array Guidelines Guidelines and Handbook - TOC • Each chapter contains • Effects • Guidelines & requirements • Tools and equations, including graphical examples • Simulation and test procedures (and URLs)

  7. Guidelines and Handbook - publishing SUBVERSION LaTeX Interactive PDF Handbook Hardcopy Compile Print Editor(s) Administrator

  8. Guidelines and Handbook - architecture • Interactive PDF Handbook • table of contents: clickable & bookmarks. • Clickable reference. • Clickable URLs. • Clickable equations. • SPIGH-tool • Java web application • Interactive equation evaluator and plotter.

  11. Guidelines and Handbook - demo • PDF • TOC, bookmarks, thumbnails • Show interactive references 3.4.1 • Show interactive equation 3.3.5 • SPIGH-tool • Three major parts: preview, equation, values • NASCAP material properties • Go over the equation parts • Mathml equation rendering. • Extraction of variables. • Range var. • Add dataseries. • Show values again. • Full screen image.

  12. Guidelines and Handbook - demo • SPIGH-tool • Blank equation • Calculator interface – explain differences • 1, 1+1, 1+1*2 • ½, 1/sqrt(2) • 1/(a*sqrt(2)) new variable, enter value • 1/(sigma*sqrt(2)) greek variables • 1/(sigma*sqrt(2*pi)) constants

  13. Guidelines and Handbook - demo • SPIGH-tool • 1/(sigma*sqrt(2*pi))*exp(-(a-mu)^2/(2*sigma^2)) • A=range -10 – 10 – 0.1, sigma = 1, mu = 0 • mu = 2.5 • Sigma = 0.5
