  2. 0. Set the Stage • Agenda • Elephants • Giraffes • Lions • Crocodiles • Introductions • John M. Roberts, safari guide extraordinaire • Background • We will see many different animals • Some of them are dangerous • Others are just tricky Time to finish checking e-mail. Start thinking about the topic. “Who are you, and why should I listen to you?” Review the information they should have read before they arrived.

  3. 1. Keep it Simple Readable fonts • How do you put an elephant into a refrigerator? Plenty of white space Open the door, put in the elephant, and close the door. Not too much information on each slide

  4. 2. Be Consistent Same fonts & size whenever possible • How do you put a giraffe into a refrigerator? If you said “open the door, put in the giraffe, and close the door”… you’ve forgotten something very large! Use colour for emphasis Open the door, take out the elephant, put in the giraffe, and close the door.

  5. 3. Use Graphics, Carefully Always use chart or diagram if available • The Lion King is having a birthday party, and invites every animal in his kingdom. All of them attend except one. Which animal does not attend? Keep it readable and clear in context ? The giraffe. He’s still in the refrigerator.

  6. 4. Present, Don’t Read Avoid the temptation to put all the information on the slide • The river is infested with crocodiles. How do you get across? Don’t talk while facing the slide. Use your screen or a hardcopy for notes You swim. The crocodiles are all at the Lion King’s party.

  7. 5. Conclude • Those wacky animals are hard to keep track of. Tell them what you told them, but summarize. • Let the giraffe out of the refrigerator, already! Repeat and emphasize actions and responsibilities • Is everyone ready for our safari? Leave time for questions, if appropriate.
