Introduction: Why Training and Development (HRD) ? • An integral part of HRM • All other R’s are A,A,A • It’s the HR → CCDV ← cutting edge • LPG /VUCA– competition (Ganesh-- Pune) how well HR’s are managed, aligned with strategy e.g., SWAL; • Prevailing scene : Hire for attitude and train for professional skills – psychometrics tests • Barter – tangible-intangible - experience → behavioral aspects Dr A Jagan Mohan Reddy

  3. So • HR is an important Resource • Our systems(HR) should facilitate an enabling environment(Gallup) • To increase Employee Engagement (Helping) • To improve Retention (Golden handcuffs) • Enhances Organizational effectiveness Dr A Jagan Mohan Reddy

Training and Development-An Overview 1.Before independence – Neglected ← industries 2.After Independence • till 60s total absent/partly present • 70s Awareness - EDP’s – ASCI / IIM’s etc • TISCO its own centre ← outside faculty • HRD first introduced by Prof Len Nadler in 1969 (1962 – TW.Schultz- investment in L) • L&T first to introduce in 1975 → growth especially lower level.   5. 3.80’s and 90’s : • Adhoc, No Systematic Approach • No survey of Training Needs • Deviation (Relaxation) from routine. But Why the Emphasis[rather renewed]Now? “Greater the quality of performance of tasks the higher the level of skills” Any spin offs ? Cost reduction, Reduction in delays Increased customer satisfaction Dr A Jagan Mohan Reddy

  6. Fine What is Our Track Record? • We have done exceedingly well e.g., NTPC-great place to work • BHEL-competing with Siemens - More than 1 lakh crore order • Areas where done: coal and crude oil in mining, petroleum in mfg and power generation in electricity Dr A Jagan Mohan Reddy

  7. Distinctions? Yes • CI Ltd. largest coal producer • BHEL 12th largest power equipment mfg • NTPC 341st in 2010 Forbes Global and ranking What is the issue? • CPSE’s employ a large work force ← efficient/effective mgt of skills/capabilities • Despite Doing well so far Sustainable Development (Retention, employee motivation etc.,) of HR’s a compelling need Dr A Jagan Mohan Reddy

  8. What Should Be Our Approach? Focus Should be On • Identifying and Nurturing Talent • Performance Driven Culture e.g., AI vs SWAL-Pilots • We need to move a) From Reactive to Proactive b) Curative to Preventive • Consider HR As An Important Resource • Productivity and Quality Of Life (WLB) Challenges Organizations Need to Address: • Growing Competition -VUCA • Have to be Distinctive ← No More Bench Marking • Improving Customer Satisfaction • Competency Development Dr A Jagan Mohan Reddy

So Initiative Should aim at building: • Competency • Compliment[Individual Excellence won’t suffice] • Culture and Systems[more imp. than strategy] With a view to Increasing Productivity Through • Efficiency (Effective too) • Timeliness, • Quality and • Job Satisfaction of Work Force • Collaborative/Cooperative While putting systems in place Dr A Jagan Mohan Reddy

Secondly, Development and Learning based on Business Requirement Parting Thought:- • Jim Collins- Bus ← Direction and right people ← R&S, Trg, induction, • Collins and Porras-study → Core Ideology (values and purpose) driving force e.g., SCCL, VSP, APTDC • Use T&D, as part of other HR initiatives towards employee engagement . • Make Them See Big Picture Dr A Jagan Mohan Reddy

  11. For Accelerating Performance and Building Productive Work Environment What to DO? P- Provide Positive Work Environment R- Recognition and Reward I- Involve, inform, inspire → perspire D- Develop Skill’s and Potential of Work Force E- Evaluate and Make Continuous Improvement We have been walking together. we have been talking to each other But Now Let’s walk the talk (both LM&HR) Dr A Jagan Mohan Reddy
