  2. Warm Up • Get ready to take quiz: everything off desk except pen/pencil • Put your notebook under desk and have it ready for me to check starting at Developmental Psychology

  3. Homework: Interview Three Adults • Interview three adults and ask them what they think are the three biggest challenges of being an adult (Parents, Teachers, Coaches, Administrators, Campus Supervisors, etc.) • Record their answers, as well as who you interviewed

  6. Warm Up • What are you most looking forward to when you enter the young adulthood stage? • What are you most looking forward to when you enter the middle adulthood stage?

Middle Adulthood (40-65) • Mid-Life Crisis: People in Middle Adulthood develop anxiety/fears about getting older and act in impulsive/inappropriate ways • Middlescence: Period of searching in adulthood that resembles adolescence • Empty Nest Syndrome: Parents develop feelings of emptiness and loss when children leave the house • Age of Mastery: You are in control of your life and you achieve confidence and happiness in your life

Middle Adulthood Discussion Questions • What examples of Mid-Life Crisis can you think of? • How does the roles of parents and children change when adults go through Mid-Life Crisis? • What do you need to achieve Age of Mastery? • What types of things do you predict your parents or your friend’s parents will start doing as a result of Empty Nest Syndrome?

  12. Menopause • Menopause- the end of menstruation for women in the late 40’s or early 50’s • Caused by not enough production of estrogen • Physical and emotional changes • Brainstorming question: What is estrogen?

Thumbs Up, Down, or Sideways • Menopause is abnormal • After Menopause, women need estrogen replacement therapy • Menopause is accompanied by depression and anxiety • Menopause ends a woman’s sex drive • After Menopause, women can stay just as active as before Menopause • Males can go through Menopause

Menopause: The Facts • ◦ Menopause is normal for women • ◦ Estrogen replacement therapy is only recommended on occasion • ◦ Many women feel a renewal of sexual interest after Menopause • ◦ Many women report having more energy after Menopause • ◦ Males can go through Andropause, which is a similar developmental stage to Menopause

What kind of work do you do? What are your goals? What do you do for fun? Do you have children? How would you describe them? What kind of parenting style do you use?

Free Radicals: Unstable Molecules in our bodies that some scientists think are the reason for damage to our bodies • b. Cross Linking: Toughening of body tissue which leads to the breakdown of various bodily processes and causes aging

  23. Dementia -Dementia: Serious loss of cognitive functioning What does Cognitive Functioning mean? What disease/illness can result from Dementia? -Senile Dementia: Serious loss of cognitive functioning after the age of 65 From what you know, have seen, or experienced, what type of cognitive functions are lost in late adulthood? If you had to guess, what do you think is the relationship between Dementia and old age?

  24. You Create the Charades Game • In a group of 4-5 people, create a charades game for physical changes that people in late adulthood go through because of Aging and Dementia • Your group must create at least 5different terms • Each person in your group will act out at least one of the terms

  34. Ego Integrity • Belief that life is meaningful and worthwhile even when physical abilities are not what they used to be • This allows people to let go of relationships and objects as the end of their lives approach • People accept that life is limited and nothing lasts forever

  35. Connecting Material • Think of someone that you know (famous or personal) who is making great contributions to society in their late adulthood. Write down their name, age, and contributions which they are making • Explain how you think Ego Integrity is impacting (or not impacting) this person • Share your answers with a partner

Death Vocabulary Terms • Hospice: Homelike place where dying people and their families are given physical and emotional support to help them cope with death and their illness • Euthanasia: Being put to death (“mercy killing”) so people don’t have to go through the pain of dying • Living Will: Legal document which people sign to claim that they don’t want to be kept alive when they are going to die anyway • Bereaved: Mourning over something or someone who has been taken away

  40. Check for Understanding • Have you ever experienced bereavement? What were the circumstances surrounding your bereavement? • Do you know anyone in Hospice? What emotions would you attach to Hospice? • Do you think that people should have the right to Euthanasia? If so, what should be the regulations for who can get Euthanasia, or should there be no regulations?

Charades • You will be given a card with a term/concept that will be on the quiz • You have to act out the word • You can’t speak and you can’t draw • If you guess the term/concept that another person is acting out, you can either go up or choose someone to act out the next word • If you act out three words and the class gets them correct, you will get extra credit on the quiz

  49. Write your eulogy • In one paragraph, write what you would like your Eulogy to say at your funeral • Think about how you want people to remember you • Think about what you still have to do to get people to remember you in this way

  50. Re-write the Lyrics to a Song • Re-Write the lyrics to a song by replacing them with lyrics which connect to the material we are reviewing for the test • You need at least ten lines
