  2. Today’s Objectives • Explain the roles of love, parenting and working in adulthood • Describe the cognitive changes that develop in adulthood • Explain the changes in personality upon adulthood

  3. Love and Parenting • 90% of Americans get married, usually to people of similar age, race, religion, education, and background • It is said that “parenthood is the greatest love a person can ever know” • Having a child often causes conflict between parents- more than 50% of marriages end in divorce

  4. Working • Women make 30% less than men in similar positions • Most families are dual career families • Children of dual career families are enrolled in daycares, which have been shown to improve social and even cognitive development

  5. Cognitive Changes • More complex evaluation of problems- understand there isn’t always one correct answer to a problem • Unexercised brains lose previously learned skills

  6. Personality Changes • Psychological health is at its best during this time frame • Some people experience a midlife crisis in which they realize that they have not accomplished all of their goals and they may not be able to do so
