  1. PREGNANCY PROJECT By: Brandon Meyer

  2. PROCESS OF PREGNANCY The first step of starting a family is conception. Conception is also known as fertilization, which is the union of the egg and sperm cell. The cells then multiply exponentially. The fertilized egg implants itself in the uterine wall. This process is called implantation.

  3. CONCEPTION

  4. THE BABY………. Zygote After the egg is fertilized it is known as a zygote. The zygote begins a two-week time period of the cells rapidly dividing. After that, it is known as an embryo. That is the early development of fetal growth. Usually the baby is not really formed. Embryo

  5. THE FETUS Trimesters Pregnancy is broken down into three trimesters. 3. In the third trimester, the eyes begin to open. Almost all organs are complete, and birth length is about 19-21 inches, and weight is about 6-9oz 1. The first trimester is fetal development. The fetus is about 1.5 inches and about an ounce. First signs of sex appears. 2. The second Trimester is when the skin starts to develop. At the end of the trimester, the fetus is about 1.5oz, and about 12 inches.

  6. There is a system called Lamaze. Lamaze education encourages women to have confidence in their body. It’s a technique that promotes natural birth pain strategies. A lot of breathing exercises to help a woman get through labor. Something to relieve the pain is epidural. It’s a very popular Anesthesia used to relieve pain during regular labor and childbirth, induced labors which is induction, forceps, or even a cesarean section. Braxton hicks contraction are uterine contraction that start about 6 weeks in your pregnancy. Uterine contraction are basically the shortening and tightening of the uterine muscles. LABOR BRAXTON HICKS

  7. Episiotomy Episiotomy is a surgical cut in the perineum. That is the area between the vagina and anus. It is made before the delivery to enlarge your vaginal opening. Obstetricians used to do episiotomies to speed delivery and to prevent the vagina from tearing, particularly during a first vaginal delivery. They used to think it will prevent future complications. Studies over the last 20 or so years have proved that it does not help.

  8. STAGES OF LABOR 1. The first stage starts with the onset of contractions that causes changes in your cervix and ends when your cervix is fully dilated. During early labor, your cervix slowly thins out and dilates. During active labor, your cervix begins to dilate more rapidly. 2. The second stage of labor starts when your cervix is fully dilated which is about 10 cm, and ends with the birth of your beautiful child 3. The third stage of labor begins after the birth of your child. It is when your placenta separates. Basically your giving birth again….

  9. APGAR SCALE PICTURES The Apgar scale is a simple method used to measure your new baby’s health. It also determines if your newborn needs immediate treatment.

  12. CESAREAN & BREECH BIRTH If your baby is breech, it means he/she is positioned to come out buttocks or feet first. Normally after about 8 months there is not much room for the baby, so the baby positions itself headfirst until birth. If it is not head first near birth then a procedure has to be done. This procedure is known as an external cephalic version (ECV). It's done by applying pressure to your abdomen and physically manipulating the baby into the right position. CESAREAN BIRTH BREECH BIRTH A Cesarean Birth, also known as a C- section, is when an incision in the abdomen to deliver the baby. Some reasons that C-sections are used are failure of labor to continue, multiple births, or even premature labor. C- sections are very common. More than 20% of births are C-sections.

  13. VAGINAL & WATER BIRTH Vaginal Birth is the most common way a baby is born. It is when the baby is positioned in the birth canal with their head delivered first from the vagina. Water birth is when the baby is delivered in warm water. This is believed to put the baby through less stress. Unfortunately there can be infections from inhaling water.

  14. STILL & PREMATURE BIRTH A stillbirth is when the fetus is already dead so the woman goes through the pain but no joy of having a wonderful child. So basically the fetus is born dead. A premature birth is when the baby is born before week 37. If so your baby will have to get put in an incubator.

  15. PRENATAL CARE Some problems that may occur during a pregnancy are miscarriages, bleeding in the 2nd trimester, and most important to protect from any problems are do not smoke and do drugs!!!!!! Some doctors you should see is a gynecologist and obstetricians. A gynecologist is a doctor that specializes in the female reproductive system. An obstetrician is a physician who specializes in medical and surgical care to women with expertise in pregnancy and childbirth. The importance of prenatal care is so the baby is healthy and has a wonderful and healthy life ahead.

  16. ADDITIONAL INFO. The placenta is the only disposable organ. The baby stays in a chamber called the amniotic sac until it is born. It helps the baby stay intact and protects it from bouncing around. The amniotic fluid is obviously in the amniotic sack. It helps the baby get ready for when it is born so the baby can breathe. Ultrasounds are checkups to see how your baby is progressing.
