Graphing Lines Using Intercepts

Graphing Lines Using Intercepts. Prepared by: Mr. Jay Mar Bolajo. x - intercept. It is the x coordinate of a point where a graph crosses the x- axis. It is the value of x when y=0. y – intercept It is the y coordinate of a point where a graph crosses the y-axis.

  1. Graphing Lines Using Intercepts Prepared by: Mr. Jay Mar Bolajo

  2. x - intercept • It is the x coordinate of a point where a graph crosses the x- axis. • It is the value of x when y=0. y – intercept • It is the y coordinate of a point where a graph crosses the y-axis. • It is the value of y when x = 0.

  3. Example 1: Find an x-intercept. • Find the x – intercept of the graph of the equation 2x+3y=6 Solution: To find an x-intercep, substitute 0 for y and solve for x. • 2x + 3y = 6 Write the original equation • 2x + 3(0) = 6 Substitute o for y • 2x = 6 2 2 x = 3 The x intercept is 3. The line crosses the x axis at (3,0)

  4. Example 2: Find a y-intercept • Find the y-intercept of the graph of the equation 2x + 3y = 6 Solution: To find a y-intercept, substitute 0 for x and solve for y. • 2x + 3y = 6 Write the original equation • 2(0) + 3y = 6 Substitute 0 for x • 3y = 6 3 3 Solve for x y = 2 The y-intercept is 2. The line crosses the y-axis at (0,2)

  5. Try this. • Find the x and y intercepts. 3x – 4y = 12

  6. Making a quick graph • Step 1: Find the intercepts • Step 2: Draw a coordinate plane that includes the intercepts • Step 3: Plot the intercepts and draw a line through them
