  1. “Teaching Children to Fish.” 21st Century Afterschool Programs PD By: LaToya Prescod -Williams 21st-century coordinator/Community Educator

  2. Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day; show him how to catch fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.

  3. The goal of the 21st Century program is to enhance the lives of Title I students, by providing opportunities they could not be afforded outside the school setting. By bridging these gaps we can bring school and community together. • The 21st Century program should be • Fun • Innovative • Academically inclined

  4. While the content is outlined in the grant, the focus is on academic skills applied to multiple subjects. This will increase over all test scores and self-esteem. For example: • The focus of our program is building fundamental skills. Students should acquire skills to promote self advocacy and decision-making in the area of academics and social-emotional well being. Self advocacy What do I do when I don't understand what's being taught or asked? How do I ask the right question(s)? Study skill How should I take notes? How do I study for a test? Problem Solving How can I guess words I don't know? ( prefixes, suffixes, root words and endings) When do I add, subtract or divide?

  5. The Florida Department of Education requires monthly deliverables to be produced by all sites receiving 21st Century funds. All sites are required to provide and document professional development, submit weekly attendance, staff sign in and sign-out sheets, daily lesson plans and artifacts, and timesheets. Please remember that timesheets cannot be signed off on until all four items are received! weekly submissions include: Student attendance Sign-in and sign-out sheet for students and staff Lesson plans and artifacts Timesheets

  6. Printing • All printing should be sent to me via email or fax (407 320 0296) • Please do not send items to the print shop without prior approval as the budget is limited. • Please indicate the number of copies needed and the date you would like to receive them. • .

  7. Supplies • Each teacher will be assigned a supply container filled with various materials to complete project-based instruction. The container will contain consumable items as well as non-consumable items such as rulers, paintbrushes, scissors, protractors, and compasses. Teachers are responsible for maintaining all non-consumable materials. All missing or broken non-consumable materials need to be reported to lead teachers. • For warehouse orders, expect a week turn around. • Other orders have to go through a biding process, so anticipate a longer wait time. • If you need a single purchase, generally under $25, please let me know and I can try and pick it up for you.

  8. Walk Throughs What I’m looking for……. • Organizational management • Adherence to the schedule • Adherence to teacher-student ratio • Fundamental skill work • Correlation of grant topics • Classroom management • Teacher creativity/enjoyment • Student social development

  9. Student Discipline • If you are having continuous problems with any student, please send me their name and contact information with a small descriptions of the behavior presented.

  10. Reconstruction Period • Changes to individual site programs will be made as needed to accelerate student success and meet the criteria of the grant. • Modifications will be made based on observations and data. • I know this is transitional period for everyone, but we will get through this together. As long as we remember that we are here for the children, we will find success. Firm Fair Consistent
