  2. Response to Intervention Response to Intervention (RtI) is the practice of providing high-quality instruction and interventions matched to student need (both academic and behavioral), monitoring progress frequently to make decisions about changes in instruction or goals, and applying child response data to important educational decisions.

  3. Response to Intervention • RtI must be viewed as a: • School-wide initiative • Bridge between regular and special education • Collaboration between schools and families

  4. Response to Intervention • RtI is a problem solving process that takes place at three levels: • At the child level • At the classroom/teacher level • At the programmatic/school level

  5. Response to Intervention • Words to live by: • High-quality, scientific, research-based instruction • Universal screening (3x per year) • Progress monitoring (on-going) • Data-based decision making

  6. What RtI is NOT: • A Special Education program or initiative • A method for increasing or decreasing SPED numbers • A process that focuses on disability determinations

  9. What will our RtI model look like? • Tier 2: Strategic Interventions (Highlights) • Intervention Team reviews data to determine appropriate intervention method and materials • Small group • Push-in/Pull-out options • Aimed at assisting between 5-10% of students

  10. What will our RtI model look like? • Tier 3: Intensive Interventions (Highlights) • Intervention Team reviews data to determine appropriate intervention method and materials • Individual intensive interventions • Aimed at assisting between 1-5% of students

  11. Assessment information: • Dominie will be used as a universal literacy assessment in EVERY elementary school • MAP data will continue to be used • Both teachers and interventionists will be involved in progress monitoring

  12. Referrals to SPED • Intervention Teams will be responsible for compiling documentation that meet IDEA and NCLB/ESEA guidelines regarding interventions provided in the general education classroom before a student may be referred for a SPED evaluation

  13. Referrals to SPED • Evaluations will require documentation of research-based interventions and progress monitoring data must include, at a minimum, the following: • Description of research-based interventions • Beginning and ending dates of interventions • Frequency of interventions • Fidelity checks • Pre and post measures • Data from progress monitoring done at least bi-weekly • Dates parent received the progress monitoring data

  14. More training to come… • On-going information provided on the RTI model • School Intervention Teams (SITs) • TestView’s new RTI component  • Identifying research-based interventions • Assessments/Interventions/Progress Monitoring for other areas of LD AND behavior will be addressed in the future
