  3. Read pages 463-464 • Based upon this timeline what do all of these incidents have in common? • In your opinion what is terrorism. • Read pages 464-465. • How does the textbook define / describe a terrorism?

Discussion questions • In your opinion why do many of the people whom we label as “terrorist” refuse to call themselves by that label? • (It is a derogatory term: these people may have more positive labels for themselves, such as “Freedom Fighters.”) • What are some of the goals of terrorist? • (Revolution to take control of a state, creation of a new nation, and anarchy) • (Goals of a terrorists can sometimes be inferred from the labels we apply to them) • (Revolutionary terrorists, Nationalistic terrorist, and Anarchistic terrorist)

Read pages 466-468 • Who are terroristthrough toWhat are the best antiterrorist measures • Describe the social profile of a typical terrorist as sketched on pg. 466. • (A typical terrorist is male in his early twenties, single, college educated, and from a middle-class to upper-class home) • In your opinion do you think terrorists usually fit this profile?

Discussion questions • Describe the organization of a typical terrorist group. • (It consists of small cells of 4 to 5, secrecy is maintained by having only one cell member, -the leader- make contact with other cells.) • (No membership list is maintained. Most ties with friends and family have been broken.)

  7. Look at the picture on pg. 467 • In your opinion why does this picture depict a terrorist act? • Is there an international network of terrorists? • (The authors describe contact among various terrorist groups and the help that they give one another)

Discussion questions • What is meant by the term “state sponsored terrorism”? • (Some governments sponsor terrorist groups or even engage in actions themselves that could be labeled “terroristic.”) • (Libya and North Korea for example allowed terrorists to live and train within their borders.) • (Some governments have provided money, arms, and advice to terrorist groups.) • (Iraq was accused of terrorism when it allowed oil to spill into the Persian Gulf from occupied Kuwait in 1991.) • (Even the U.S. was accused of terrorism when its agents mined a Nicaraguan harbor in the mid-1980s.)
