Background Remedial Course Taking in College About 40% of NM grads take remedial math Numeracy & Computation Intermediate Algebra not considered remedial About 30% take remedial English Literacy & Communication Overall it ranged from 86% to 18% at public high schools education.nmdfa.state.nm.us/

High School Redesign (SB561) • 4 Math units for students entering in 2009 • equivalent to or higher than the level of Algebra 2 • unless the parent submitted written, signed permission for the student to complete a lesser math unit • Algebra 1 offered in Grade 8 by 2008-9 • in regular classroom settings or • through on-line courses or • agreements with high schools. The Promise of these New Requirements: Students better prepared for the college and workplace (21st Century Jobs)!

  7. Statewide Voluntary Math Curriculum • Does NOT replace currently selected textbooks! • Is a “toolkit” of materials that will include • Prerequisite Skill Items • Higher Order Thinking Skills Items • Sample Activities • Assessment Items from NAEP and/or TIMSS • Sample Lesson Plans

Supports for 4 Years of Math • Uniform Curriculum in Districts (HB911) -school district’s math, language arts, and science curricula and related professional development must align to state standards for each grade level so that students who transfer between public schools within the school district receive the same educational opportunity -Math in SY 2008-9 -LA and Science in SY 2009-10

Supports for 4 Years of Math Algebra 1 in Grade 8 • This year about 60% of middle schools are offering Algebra 1 • Almost 20% of G8 students are taking Algebra 1 G7 Math NMSBA Proficiency Levels of Students Taking Algebra in G8 in 2006-7 1234 7% 41% 44% 8% Note: statewide only 23% were at level 3 or 4

  10. Challenges for 4 Years of Math • More students entering high school better prepared for math • Courses and other supports for students who not prepared for high school math • Ensure that increased requirements don’t lead to “watered-down” courses • ADP Model Courses

  11. More Challenges for 4 Years of Math • Identify options for a 4th course • More well-trained math teachers • Expand post-secondary role in offering courses to high school students • Develop Distance Ed - Cyber Academy courses • Clarify role of Advanced Placement courses

Mandated High School Assessments • Senate Bill 561 • The readiness assessment system shall include the following components (by ’08-09): (1) a high school readiness assessment in English, reading, math and science in the fall semester of G9; (2) a college readiness assessment in English, reading and math in G10; and (3) a workplace readiness assessment to assess applied skills in reading, math and locating info in G11. • Current high school grad exam sunsets on July 1, 2010

Implementing the Assessments G9 • G9: Locally administered Diagnostic Assessment (High School Readiness) Provide tools/data for teachers to support instruction & for administrators to monitor student progress • G8 NMSBA forms basis for starting pt of the diagnostics process • Administered in Fall & thruout year • Computerized combo of NMSBA & diagnostic assessments • State funds for implementing the program • In 2008-9 in both G9 and G10

Implementing the Assessments G10 • G10: State-administered SBA (College Readiness) Measures student mastery of Standards • Current G9&G11 will be replaced w/ G10 SBAs in Math & English • Science & Soc Stu will remain in G11 • Will serve for both accountability (AYP) & graduation • Link to ACT, SAT, etc.

Implementing the Assessments G11 • G11: Locally administered Workplace Portfolio (Workplace/Post Sec Readiness) Assess student readiness for post-secondary ed & the workplace • Allows for different paths for different careers • Aligned to NM Career Clusters • Electronic w/ fixed categories & some required content • Multiple measures (Next Step Plans for planning): ACT/SAT, WorkKeys, projects, workplace perfor-mance, EOC exams, AP scores, leadership, grades

  16. Tests for Graduation • Current tests go away on July 1, 2010 • Replacements? • New G10 Math and English (chance to repeat in G11 if failed) • Science and Soc Stu may continue in G11 • Portfolio if continued failure??
