  2. Lying and Deception:Judeo-Christian view

  3. Judeo-Christian Principles Proverbs 6:16-19 • Lying is an abomination to God • Lying = wicked imaginations, false witnessing, sowing discord Proverbs 12:17-22 • Deceit = false witness • Deceit comes from an evil heart • Lying is an abomination to the Lord • Truth telling delights the Lord

  4. Judeo-Christian Principles Colossians 3:9 “Lie not one to another.” 1 Timothy 4:2 “Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron”

  5. Judeo-Christian Principles Numbers 23:19 “God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?” Titus 1:2 “In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began” Hebrews 6:18 “it was impossible for God to lie.”

  6. Judeo-Christian Principles • What drives a person to lie? • What drives a person to deceive or engage in deceit? • Desire to sow discord • Mischief in the heart • Evil imaginations

  7. Judeo-Christian Principles Phil 4:8 “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” Prov 23:7 “For as a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.”

  8. Lying and Deception:Islamic view

  9. Wala’ wabara’Loyalty and enmity“Loving what Allah loves & hating what Allah hates”

  10. Dualistic Ethics or Dualism • No Golden Rule – two sets of ethical rules • 12 Verses—Muslim not a friend to Kafir • Integrity can not be defined • Taqiyya — sacred deceit

  11. Islamic Principles Quran 003.028 “Let not the believers take for friends or helpers unbelievers (kufirs) rather than believers: if any do that, in nothing will there be help from Allah: except by way of precaution, that ye may Guard yourselves from them. But Allah cautions you (To remember) Himself; for the final goal is to Allah.”

  12. Islamic Principles Quran 002.014 “When they meet those who believe, they say: "We believe;" but when they are alone with their evil ones, they say: "We are really with you: We (were) only jesting."

  13. Islamic Principles Quran 016.106 “Any one who, after accepting faith in Allah, utters Unbelief,- except under compulsion, his heart remaining firm in Faith - but such as open their breast to Unbelief, on them is Wrath from Allah, and theirs will be a dreadful Penalty.”.

  14. Islamic Principles Quran 005.101-103 “O ye who believe! Ask not questions about things which, if made plain to you, may cause you trouble. … Some people before you did ask such questions, and on that account lost their faith.”

  15. Islamic Principles Quran 008.030 “Remember how the Unbelievers plotted against thee, to keep thee in bonds, or slay thee, or get thee out (of thy home). They plot and plan, and Allah too plans; but the best of planners is Allah.”

  16. Islamic Principles Quran 010.021 “When We make mankind taste of some mercy after adversity hath touched them, behold! they take to plotting against Our Signs! Say: "Swifter to plan is Allah!" Verily, Our messengers record all the plots that ye make!”

  17. Islamic Principles Quran 003.054 “And (the unbelievers) plotted and planned, and Allah too planned, and the best of planners is Allah.”

  18. Islamic Principles Al-Muslim Book 032, Number 6303: A liar is not one who tries to bring reconciliation amongst people and speaks good (in order to avert dispute), or he conveys good. IbnShihab said he did not hear that exemption was granted in anything what the people speak as lie but in three cases: in battle, for bringing reconciliation amongst persons and the narration of the words of the husband to his wife, and the narration of the words of a wife to her husband (in a twisted form in order to bring reconciliation between them).

  19. Islamic Principles Allah's Apostle said: "War is deceit“ Bukhari Volume 4, Book 52, Number 268: Narrated Abu Huraira The Prophet said, "War is deceit.“ Bukhari Volume 4, Book 52, Number 269: Narrated Jabir bin 'Abdullah

  20. Islamic Principles R1.1 Holding one’s tongue: “Every legally responsible person should refrain from saying anything except where there is a clear advantage to speaking.” R8.2 Permissible Lying: “it is permissible to lie if attaining the goal is permissible.” Reliance of the Traveler: Al Classic Manual of Islamic Sacred Law:

  21. Islamic Principles “Terror cannot be struck into the hearts of an army by merely cutting its lines of communication or depriving it of its routes of withdrawal. It is basically related to the strength or weakness of the human soul. It can be installed only if the opponent’s faith is destroyed. Psychological dislocation is temporary; spiritual dislocation is permanent.” Quranic Concept of War, Page 60

  22. Islamic Principles • Taqiyah – dissimulation: "to save life, honour. or property (either one's own or of other believers) by hiding one's belief or religion" http://www.al-islam.org/taqiyah/ • Tawriya – concealing or keeping secret, hiding, concealment, dissimulation, double-entendre, allusion “Let not the believers take the disbelievers as their friends rather than the believers; whoso shall do this then he has no relation with Allah except when you have to guard yourselves against them for fear from them; but Allah cautions you of Himself for unto Allah is the end of your journey. Say, whether you conceal what is in your hearts or manifest it, Allah knows it; and He knows all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth; and verily Allah has power over all things.” Quran 3:28-29

  23. Islamic Principles “al-Taqiyya is my religion and the religion of my ancestors.” “He who doesn’t practice al-Taqiyya, doesn’t practice his religion.” al-Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (AS) (The 6th Imam of Ahlul-Bayt)

  24. Al Taqiya • Al-Taqiya - a concept based on Quran 3:28 and 16:106 as well as hadith, tafsir literature and judicial commentaries that permit and encourage precautionary dissimulation as a means for hiding true faith in times of persecution or deception when penetrating the enemy camp. • "Concealing or disguising one's beliefs, convictions, ideas, feelings, opinions, and/or strategies at a time of eminent danger, whether now or later in time, to save oneself from physical and/or mental injury.“ • Taqiya has been used by Muslims since the 7th century to confuse and split “the enemy” • One result is the ability to maintain two messages, one to the faithful while obfuscation and denial is sent - and accepted -to the non-Muslim audience William Gawthrop Islam’s Tools of Penetration More that just a Shia tradition!

  25. Taqiya It has been a active element of CAIR from its inception as a HAMAS entity organized for disinformation FBI

  26. Qur’an Verse 3:28 Tafsirs provide doctrinal explanations for Quranic Verses Ibn Kathir’s is authoritative! The Quranic Basis determines it’s doctrinal basis as a divine mandate …

  27. …found in modern U.S. publication of Islamic Law

  28. Who does this apply to? It means what it says and it applies to you! Lying All is permitted in the effort?

  29. “Injustice” as defined by Islamic Law

  30. The King Hearings … that is put in practice by the very groups created to facilitate it! Simply Implementing the “Law of the Land”

  31. … they are simply giving effect to an Islamic legal standard ... When CAIR tells Muslims not to talk to the FBI … Actually, when you think about it, this is NEITHERHARD - NORCOMPLICATED! … that the Muslim Brotherhood declares in its bylaws to be a strategic objective … … that the American Muslim Brother- -hood seeks to impose …

  32. Summary – lying and deception • Allah commands Muslims to lie and/or engage in deceit when it advantages Islam • Muslims are commanded to be guarded in all relations with non-Muslims • Allah is the best schemer, planner or plotter

  33. Question 1? Do the definitions of lying and deceit matter? If so how?

  34. Question 2? If the definitions of lying and deceit matter, do the defining principles and precepts authorizing the action also matter?

  35. Answer If the definitions of lying and deceit in the US and Islam are not the same, and if we (Americans) do not know these differences, we will not have an informed Foreign Policy, we cannot do Counter-terrorism and we will not understand where, nor why IEDs will proliferate.

  36. Remember • “War is deceit” Muhammad – Hadith 4:269 7th AD • “All warfare is based on deception. There is no place where espionage is not used. Offer the enemy bait to lure him.” Sun Tzu – The Art of War, 6th BC
