  1. What's poetry? • Definition • Poetry is an imaginative awareness of experience expressed through meaning, sound, and rhythmic language choices so as to evoke an emotional response. • Poetry has been known to employ meter and rhyme, but this is by no means necessary. • Poetry is an ancient form that has gone through numerous and drastic reinvention over time. • The very nature of poetry as an authentic and individual mode of expression makes it nearly impossible to define.

  2. What Is Poetry? ~ • Poem • A poem can be a brief, shining moment in which you capture a kernel of something beautiful for the first time. • It can be way for you to explore your deepest, private thoughts and make language come alive. • Writing poetry can be a great pleasure and a great challenge. • The best way to begin thinking about writing poetry is to read the poetry of others.

  3. Characteristics Of Poetry • Theme: • The central meaning of the poem. • Poets write to try to make sense of life and to convey their thoughts about nature, birth, love, death, families, growing up, and so on. • Poets also create pictures of, and make comments on, social concerns like poverty, the environment, and technology. They tell stories and put abstract feelings into words.

  4. Images: • The pictures the poet creates through language. • Poets are astute observers; they see ordinary people, events, and objects in a fresh and original way. • Poets are sensitive to the sights, sounds, smells, and textures of things around them. • They see priceless moments and details and the "show" them to the reader through carefully crafted words

  5. Diction- • The selection of specific words. • Poets choose words carefully and arrange them in the best order: they make every word count. • Poets use rhyme and rhythm, alliteration and assonance, similes and metaphors, and other poetic techniques to capture the essence of what they mean.

  6. Form • The arrangement of words, lines, verses, rhymes, and other features. • There are different kinds of poems, each governed by its own set of rules for composition.
