How does the respiratory system work? • Air is warmed, moistened and filtered as it travels through the mouth and nasal passages. • It then passes through the trachea and one of the two bronchi into one of the lungs. • After passing into the many bronchioles, it finally arrives into some of the millions of tiny sacs called alveoli. • This is where gas exchange takes place - oxygen passes out of the air into the blood, and carbon dioxide passes out of the blood into the air in the alveoli.

  3. How do you keep your heart and lungs healthy? • Exercise is a major component to having a healthy heart. When you take part in vigorous exercise (like biking, running, or swimming, for example), your lungs require more air to give your cells the extra oxygen they need. As you breathe more deeply and take in more air, your lungs become stronger and better at supplying your body with the air it needs to succeed. • Smoking ruins your lungs because it causes them to become clogged up with tar, which is in the smoke.
