  6. In the Beginning: • Aggregators • No electronic feeds required at first • Scan, key – whatever necessary to address conversion standards of hosting services • Proprietary systems – access restricted • Percent of revenue • Minimum amount of work required by publisher • Money for nothing

Dot.com to Dot.bomb • OCLC estimated in 2001, the Web had grown to 8.4 million unique web sites up from 7.1 million in 2000 • 18% growth rate is indicative of dot.com bust as well as overall maturing nature of the Web, down from 52% in past year. • 40% of these sites are public and offer content that is freely accessible by the general • 21% are private sites that include access restrictions or fee based subscriptions

The New Gold Rush • Publishers love/hate relationship with the Web • Loss of control/protecting assets • Better understanding of value of data – the Royalty Creep • Placing more restrictions on third parties • Aggressively pursue conversion applications • Enables not only web site creation but ability to supply data directly

  10. Old Players, New Players, Who Owns Whom? • Everyone can be a content creator – barriers to entry are minimized. • But is it the same content? • What about archives • What about images • Embargoes • Is more better?

  11. Rules of the Game • Know your use requirements • Understand license grant/terms • Assignment if ownership changes • Not just about cost or cost structure • Just in time vs. just in case • Collection development for the 21st century

  12. And the Winner is!!! • Be creative • Understand what you need and why • Don’t be bulldozed by price • Look before you leap • Address short term but prepare for long term
