  1. The Concept of Change William & Mary, Lesson 2

  2. The concept of change will be the basis of our journey into the literature in this unit.  • We will read selections connected to the theme of change and explore different types of changes!

  3. Let’s brainstorm! • What do you think of when you hear the word change? • What kinds of things change? • What is it about them that changes?

  4. Let’s categorize! • Categorizing means to put things into groups based on ways they are alike.

  5. We can use a Thinking Map to help us categorize words and show how they are related! • TREE MAPS help us CLASSIFYand CATEGORIZEinformation. • What does a tree map look like? (Think of a main trunk with branches)

  6. Tree Maps can help us categorize our related words! CHANGE • Look at the changes you brainstormed! • Think about how you can put these ideas into groups. 

  7. Let’s categorize our changes! • How could we put our change ideas into groups? How are some of the changes alike? • Could some of your changes belong to more than one group? • What are some of different ways you might categorize your changes? • What do your ideas tell you about changes, in general? • What are some of the characteristics of change?

  8. Let’s share our Tree Maps!! • How did you categorize your changes?

  9. Let’s brainstorm! • Think of things that do not change. • What are some things that are always the same or that always happen the same way? • Look at your list of things that change. While those things are changing, can you think of anything else that stays the same?

  10. Let’s categorize things that do NOT change! • What can you say about the ideas of things that do not change? How could you put them into groups? • What could you call each group? Why? change

  11. Think about these ideas. Do they show change? How? • Rules • Routines • Table manners • Laws • Customs of cultures

  12. Meet General Generalization! A generalization is something that is always or almost always true.

  13. General Generalization wants to know… Can you say something that is always or almost always true about change?

  14. Change Generalizations • Change is linked to time. • Change happens over time. • Change may be perceived as orderly or random. • Some changes are caused by people, and other changes happen naturally. • Change is everywhere.

  15. How do our ideas about change and its generalizations apply or not apply to the things below? • Non-living things (a chair, pair of scissors,etc..) • Traditions (special holidays, birthdays, etc..) • Religious rituals (celebrations of Christmas or Hannukah) • Universal truths (all living things die, triangles have 3 sides, etc..)

  16. Change Web Change is linked to time. Change is everywhere. Change Change may be positive. Change may be negative. Change may be perceived as orderly. Change may be perceived as random. Change may happen naturally. Change may be caused by people.

  17. Your Task: • Work with your small groups to complete a Change Web. • Draw or write ideas that support each of the five generalizations about change.
