  1. Ethers By Darienne Tupper And Lynette Manuel

  2. Basic structure • All ethers have the same basic structure: R-O-R • These molecules consist of two alkyl groups separated by an oxygen atom, where R is an alkyl group.

  3. Naming Ethers • In most cases ethers are named by naming each group of the molecules that are attached to the oxygen and by putting the word ether at the end. • Example: methyl ethyl ether benzyl propyl ether ___ ___ ___ CH3 O CH2 CH3 CH3 CH2 CH2 O

  4. Naming Ethers (con’t) • To name ethers you can split up the alkyl groups • You must then proceed to place “oxy” in the middle and end it with an ane • Example: methyl oxy ethane benzyl oxy propane ___ ___ ___ CH3 O CH2 CH3 CH3 CH2 CH2 O

  5. Uses for Ethers • In the past ethers were commonly used as a general anaesthetic in surgery. They are no longer a common anaesthetic due to their high flammability. • Useful solvents for other organic compounds such as fats and oils. • Ethers with higher molecular masses can be used as solvents for varnishes and lacquers. • Dimethyl ether is used as a propellant for aerosol sprays. • Produces excellent relaxation of the muscles, pulse rate and rate of respiration.

  6. Characteristics • Flammable • Volatile • Not very reactive • Often colourless liquid of characteristic odour • Pure aliphatic, pure aromatic or mixed • Insoluble or slightly soluble in water
