  2. Revolutions • Many different types of revolution • Political Revolution: Over throw and replacement of government

  3. French Revolution 1789-1799 • Causes • New Enlightenment Ideas (Locke and Roussea) • Unfair King/Monarch and Church • French people extremely poor/unfairly taxed

  4. Causes: Enlightenment • Reason used to solve problems • People start to question • Divine Right • Power of the King • Power of the Church

  5. Unfair king/Nobles and clergy • The King and Church both • Tax the people • Do not pay taxes • Can take property whenever they want

  6. Poor French People • France in debt (lots of wars) • Third Estate (everyone not noble or church), pays all of the taxes • Price of food goes up because of famine • Has no say in Goverment

  7. Estate General • Three Estates meet to try to solve problems • 1st and 2nd Estate gang up on 3rd Estate (2 is bigger than 1) • 3rd Estate makes Tennis Court Oath……….. • REVOLUTION BEGINS

  8. The Bastille 7/14/1780 • A Prison and Armory (weapon storage) • French people attack it to take weapons • First violent action of F.R.

  9. Great Fear and Reign of Terror • Great Fear • Peasants fear nobles will horde grain • “Starvation into submission • Peasants attack manor house • Reign of Terror • Many groups want control • “enemies of the revolution” are executed • Over 40,000 executed, 16,594 by guillotine

  10. Napoleon comes to power 1799-1815

  11. Napoleon Bonaparte • born in 1769 • Wealthy, was able to attend school • Studied Military tactics from ages 9-16

  12. Napoleon • Very successful military commander • Leader of French Army by 26 • At one point controlled most of Europe

  13. Napoleon Takes France 1799 • wins a series of wars, becomes famous • Comes to Paris, organizes a “Coup d’etat” • This is when the military over throws the government • Napoleon becomes Emperor in 1804

  14. Positive Things • Napoleonic Code: Modern law and legal system • Made French Banking System • Controlled and stopped Revolution Chaos • Rebuilt Paris, rest of France

  15. Negatives • Fights dozens of wars (wins most of them) • Takes away the citizenship and rights of women • Silences critics and opposition • Freedom of Speech taken away

  16. Down fall (1810-1814) • Attempts to fight a war with Russia, cannot win • His army never recovers • Other countries joins together (coalition) to fight Napoleon • French people are given two options. Fight or turn over Napoleon
