  3. Jackson versus “political enemies” • “spoils system”- government jobs given to political supporters of the party in power • Jackson fires 10% of government officials, replacing them with DEMOCRATS

  4. Jackson v. Supreme Court and Cherokees • Enacts forced relocation of Cherokee even though Supreme Court ruled they had a right to stay in Georgia • “Trail of Tears”

  5. Jackson vs. John C Calhoun and South Carolina Nullification • South Carolina nullifies a Tariff • VP Calhoun supports this “states right” • Jackson threatens military force

  6. Jackson vs. Nicholas Biddle and the National Bank • Vetoes National Bank in 1832 • New use of veto power!! • Wins re-election • Puts money into “pet banks” in states • Leads to economic chaos
