ELIN@ why? - Problems and Challenges • Navigation - There are thousands of e-journals and hundreds of databases • Library branding • Point to alternatives – open archives and open access journals • Integrating Open Access resources in Library Services • Enhancing availability and visibility of scientific literature • Make life easier for end users • Make life easier for librarians (end user training etc) • Collection management in a “package” world • Enhance usage of electronic material

  6. Finding information • Library branding is very important • users often believe that full-text e-journals are free on the Internet! • ”If it is not on the web, it does not exist” • We want to brand our services and promote Open Access resources

  7. Organising end user access to information resources • The goals: • Integration of all services • Development of personalized services • Branding of library services • Principles: • Single sign on – automatic authentification – one login/password to all resources • Remote access

  8. ELIN: Electronic Library Information NavigatorWhat is it? ELIN@ • all electronic resources accessible through a single user interface • one single system to support and train users • a range of simple to use administrative tools, all accessible via Web pages that allow for full administration of the ELIN@ system

In ELIN@ end users can - get an overview of all online resources recommended by the library • cross search among different types of documents from different providers using one single user-friendly interface • have direct access to the full text • browse table-of-contents • order documents not available in full text • download bibliographic data in other formats, e.g. for EndNote or Reference Manager. • use the alert system for automatically notifications about new documents matching saved queries • use the alert system for automatically notifications about new issues of “favorite” journals

  10. Personalization • ”My Collection” • Recommended resources – selected by subject librarians • Add your personal favourites • SDI-alerts from databases, journals etc. • TOC-alerts • Users register at one site for all alerts

  23. Is ELIN@ federated searching?? • Not really!! • Usually Federated Search services targets external sources live • Problems with connectors etc. • ELIN@ collects all metadata, consolidates metadata, indexes and creates the foundation for personalized functionalities
