  5. Before You Go… Tips For Packing… "Pack everything you think you will need,  and get rid of half of it." 1 • Choose dark (black, dark blue, purple, green, dark red) or neutral (all browns and shades of gray) colored clothing, so any dirt or stains acquired along the way won't be too apparent. Try to stick to two or three colors, so that all your clothes mix and match.

  6. Before You Go… Tips For Packing… "Pack everything you think you will need,  and get rid of half of it." 2 • For cooler weather travelers:  layering clothes is more effective than hauling around bulky sweaters or coats.

  7. Before You Go… Tips For Packing… "Pack everything you think you will need,  and get rid of half of it." 3 • Roll, don’t fold, your clothes. You will be able to fit more into your suitcase, and rolling decreases the wrinkles that will appear (no ironing!!).

  8. Before You Go… Tips For Packing… "Pack everything you think you will need,  and get rid of half of it." 4 • Put an odour absorber, scented drawer sachet, or scented dryer sheets inside your luggage to keep your clothes (and shoes) smelling fresh.

  9. Before You Go… Tips For Packing… "Pack everything you think you will need,  and get rid of half of it." 5 • Travel guides are big and bulky; instead of bringing whole guides, try taking out just the pages you need. Then, punch a hole through them, and join them together on a ring. You’ll have all of the information you need, without the bulk.

  10. What other ‘Tips for Packing’ can you think of?

  11. Before You Go… What to Pack… "Pack everything you think you will need,  and get rid of half of it." • a skirt, dress, or good pants for a night on the town • many nightclubs and fancy restaurants will refuse admittance to people wearing jeans or sneakers • a pair of good walking shoes or sandals • a raincoat, waterproof jacket, or umbrella • a Swiss Army knife (preferably with scissors and a corkscrew)

  12. Before You Go… What to Pack… "Pack everything you think you will need,  and get rid of half of it." • toiletries – small, travel size bottles • towel – microfiber sport towels fold up nice and small and dry super quick • sheet – satin/polyester or silk* • camera & film – if using digital, be sure to have an adapter plug set and • voltage converter • first aid kit • sewing kit these can be made very budget friendly using supplies from home

  13. We talked about the dress code for nightclubs and fancy restaurants. Can you think of possible dress codes for visiting temples, churches, or monestaries?

  14. Before You Go… What to Pack… "Pack everything you think you will need,  and get rid of half of it." • daypack – useful for carrying your camera, batteries, maps, travel guides, snacks… • luggage locks • combination or key locks for luggage/backpack zipper • padlock or cable lock for hostel lockers • TSA 3-Dial lock and cable for locking luggage on trains, in hostels, etc… • laundry detergent packs – lets you wash underwear, socks, etc…in the sink • travel alarm clock

  15. Before You Go… What to Pack… "Pack everything you think you will need,  and get rid of half of it." • money – bring your ATM card, a charge card if possible, back up traveler’s cheques, and have about fifty-dollars worth of cash on hand • money belt – keep money, passport, ATM cards, etc…close at all times; wear your money belt UNDER your clothes!! • identification – passport, driver’s license, ISIC, etc… • remember to make at least three photocopies of your passport – leave one at home, and hide the other two in different places in your luggage • you may want to scan a copy into your email account for easy international access

  16. Budget-Friendly Airlines • With the European Open-Skies Treatyof 1992, budget airlines soared • airlines no longer needed government approval to fly anywhere within the EU • Ryan Air • Easy Jet • German Wings • Air Berlin Contrary to public belief, most budget airlines have EXCELLENT safety records

  17. Why do you think there is a common public conception that budget airlines are dangerous?

  18. Budget-Friendly Airlines There are 62 low cost airlines in Europe!! Increase Your Probability of Getting A Cheaper Flight…. • fly mid-week • fly early in the morning or late at night • fly in off-season (spring and fall) • don’t fly during public holidays • don’t book your ticket less than two weeks in advance*

  19. Budget-Friendly Airlines There are drawbacks to flying cheap… Budget Airlines’ Restrictions… • weight limit – most discount airlines charge you up to $10 for every kg you’re over • food is usually not served during the flight, or it is available for a fee • In-flight entertainment isn't normally provided • most discount airlines try to lower airport fees, so they often use smaller and more distant airports • discount airlines do not wait for late running passengers, since an idle plane waiting for a passenger costs money

  20. Review your list of budget airline restrictions – why do you think it’s not a good idea to vacuum-pack your luggage?

  21. Budget-Friendly Travelling Don’t want to fly?? Train • most rail companies have started to offer discounted advance fares • travelling by high-speed train can be faster and cheaper • no time/cost to get to airport • less time needed for embarking & disembarking • usually more baggage allowance • your ISIC card will offer extra discounts for train fairs…. • most train passes are only good for up to 2 months

  22. Budget-Friendly Travelling Don’t want to fly?? Car • can be much cheaper to rent a car between three or four people • no one else’s itinerary; you choose when and where to go • price can go up when you include: • gas • road tolls • many countries have age restriction of 24 to rent a car

  23. Budget-Friendly Travelling Don’t want to fly?? Bus • one of the cheapest forms of travel • good for long-term European travel (more than 2 months) • great way to meet people • less chance of anything going missing from your luggage • can be slow, hot, and uncomfortable

  24. Which mode of transportation would you most likely opt for? Why?

  25. Budget-Friendly Accommodation Don’t know where to stay?? Hostels • offer low priced accommodation that provides a bed, pillow, blanket, and bathing facilities, usually in dormitory style • many hostels include a free breakfast in their nightly price, have low priced meals available, and/or have a kitchen available for guests to use • most hostels require that you have your own sheets and towels

  26. Budget-Friendly Accommodation Don’t know where to stay?? **Ask about VIP Backpackers** Hostels • most hostels require that guests be at least 18 years old or they must be accompanied by a parent/guardian • with the exception of the Bavarian region of Germany, there are no upper age restrictions at most hostels • in Bavaria, most, but not all, hostels require guests to be under 26 years of age

  27. Budget-Friendly Accommodation Don’t know where to stay?? Hostels • adult prices range from $15.00-$45.00 (per night, per person), with the most common prices being between $20.00-$30.00 • large cities like London and Paris tend to be more expensive than smaller towns • hostels in Eastern and Southern Europe tend to be on the low end of the price range • price is also determined by how many beds are in a room • dormitories are the cheapest with anywhere from 10-20 people in a room • many hostels also have 6, 4, 2, and 1 person rooms or offer special rooms for families – each at an increasing price.

  28. Budget-Friendly Accommodation Hostels What do they offer?? • Key or key card for your room (usually a small deposit is required) • Sheet, blanket, & towel rental (small fee or deposit) • Train station and/or airport pick-up (usually free) • Continental breakfast and/or coffee & tea (usually free, sometimes for a  fee) • Laundry facility access (small fee) • Kitchen access (free) • Internet access (sometimes free, but usually for a fee) • Pay phone access • Discounted meals • In-house bar and/or restaurant • Satellite television (free) • VCR & video library (sometimes free, but usually for a fee) • Travel & reading libraries and book exchanges (free) • Pool tables (usually free, but sometimes for a small fee) • Bicycle rental • Book your next hostel (usually for free) • Bookings for backpacking tours, day trips, city tours, walking tours, etc.

  29. Which hostel amenities are the most important to you? Which are the least?

  30. Budget-Friendly Accommodation Want social tourism?? Stay With Family & Friends • Before you leave for your journey abroad make sure you tap all your relatives..er..I mean resources.  Your second cousin once removed owns a chalet in Switzerland--be sure to visit dear cousin Hans.   Your sister's friend's college roommate is now living in London--you simply must stop by keep her abreast of the latest news from home.  • If you know someone in Europe, contact them before you leave; you might be able to get a free night's lodging and personal tour of the city they live in.   • Be sure to send them a thank you note when you get back home or a post card from another leg of your journey.

  31. Budget-Friendly Accommodation Want social tourism?? Be A Vagrant (Not Endorsed by UCDSB) • option wherever you choose to go – not a smart option – but an option you could choose nonetheless • sleep in airports, train stations, bus stations, parks, beaches, back allies, under a rock, etc. and are willing to possibly be arrested for violating the law (improbable, but entirely possible if the authorities are in a bad mood) then you could save some money doing this from time to time • NOT RECOMMENDED • EXTREMELY DANGEROUS

  32. Budget-Friendly Accommodation Is the whole family going?? Home Exchange • the newest form of budget-friendly accommodation (think Kate and Cameron in The Holiday) • no fee accommodation • if an exchange could face trouble of unsavoury partners • if taking turns, can host family, meet new friends, have free tour guides, etc… Check Out These Sites: Stay4free.com Trading Homes International Global Free Loaders
