Composting or Digestion ? • Composting is aerobic (with air), digestion is anaerobic (without air) • Digestion happens in a fermenter (digester, ‘tank’) • Composting produces compost • Digestion produces compost, gas and process water • Gas is converted into renewableenergy, process water can be used as liquid fertiliser

(cont’d) • If odorous materials are being processed, composting also needs to be enclosed • Digestion has somewhat higher capital costs but also higher revenues • Digestion requires less space • Both generic technologies are well proven • There are a range of types and brands of individual technologies
