  3. Most Worshipfuls, Right Worshipfuls, Worshipfuls, Past Right Worshipfuls, Past Masters, Officers, Distinguished White Apron and White Apron Brethren, Life is fleeting. Every breath we take brings us one breath closer to the last. One breath closer to the threshold of reality. One breath closer to the time when the veil of our burdensome existence falls away to reveal what the promise of things hoped for can only secure… victory over death and the immortality of the soul. Now, brethren, how many times have you considered the former? And, brethren, how many times have you considered the latter? And, brethren, how many times, after considering either, have you felt the burden of proof weighing heavily on your mind. It’s okay. Be honest. I’ve had difficulty dealing with it as well. In fact, I’m sure a great many of you avoid considering it at all. But what if I told you I had proof. And what if I told you that proof was communicated to me through a pin. And what if I told you that proof, after being communicated to me through a pin, was affirmed with a gift. Yeah, I know. I’m out of my mind. I’m crazy. And believe me when I tell you I’d think the same, if I didn’t know better… but I do. And because I do, I deliberated long and hard over whether or not to share the experience I had with you at all. And after many weeks of deliberation I resolved to share it with you because… Harry would have wanted it that way. You see, brethren, it was approximately one year ago, on the night of my installation to be exact (12/13/14), that I was blessed with the honor of affixing a pin, as a token of gratitude, to the lapel of a jacket worn by a member of our lodge (Euclid Lodge #136 F.&A.M.). A member of our lodge (Euclid Lodge #136 F.&A.M.), brethren, who dedicated sixty-one years of his precious life to the Craft. A member of our lodge (Euclid Lodge #136 F.&A.M.), brethren, who was responsible for handing me the petition that would grant me entry into the Craft. Who am I referring to? Well, brethren, none other than our very own… Harry Ashbahian. And as fate would have it, December 13, 2014, would mark the very last time Bro. Ashbahian and I would meet on the level, before an assembly of venerable brethren and guests, in a mutual exchange of appreciation and brotherly love. Unfortunately, the very next time, would be on the day of his viewing, Sunday, October 4, 2015, before an assembly of family and friends. And it was on that fateful day in October, brethren, that I received proof. Proof of the existence of two of life’s most impossible truths… victory over death and the immortality of the soul. And even more amazing, brethren, was the way that I received it. It was communicated to me… through a pin. 4. Now, for those of you who are less familiar with the funerary customs observed by Masons in tribute to a fallen member of the Craft, the following may come as a surprise to you. But for those of you who are familiar with the customs, the following will come as no surprise to you at all. For you see it has always been the custom among Masons, at the end of every funeral service, to have brethren in attendance, motioned forth by a Marshal, pay their final respects to a fallen member of the Craft. And, ironically enough, brethren, it was during that portion of the ceremony, when brethren in attendance are motioned forth by a Marshal to pay their final respects to a fallen member of the Craft, that my brush with the afterlife began. Now, before you write me off, brethren, let me explain. If you can recall a time when someone you love passed away, then you will sympathize with what I’m about to say. The most difficult thing a human being can do is stare death in the face. And it is for that reason that I resolved, as I was motioned forth by the Marshal and turned to face the casket that housed our dearly departed brother’s remains, NOT to look Harry in the face. And it was at that moment when I resolved NOT to look Harry in the face that I found myself most vulnerable. For it was at that very moment, brethren, when I resolved NOT to look Harry in the face that my gaze fell squarely on his lapel. And what I found on his lapel, brethren, still amazes me to this day. For you see, brethren, still affixed to his lapel, was the very pin I had adorned him with approximately fifty two weeks ago to the day (12/13/14). My heart sank. I was floored. I didn’t know what to say because it was at that very moment, brethren, that I realized… Harry was okay. For you see, brethren, what Harry had communicated to me, through a pin, on that fateful day was validation Masonic Ritual can never convey… victory over death and the immortality of the soulwas assured on that day (10/04/2015). But what I hadn’t expected on that fateful day was to have it affirmed the very next day. For you see, brethren, what occurred on the very next day was affirmation of it’s existence from beyond the grave. Now, you’re probably asking yourself, “What the hell is he talking about?!” Well, brethren, it’s quite simple. Let me explain. On the morning of Monday, October 5, 2015, I received a voicemail. The voicemail I received was unlike any I received before. Why? Well, brethren, because the voicemail I received, indicated to me that I would be conferred an invaluable thing. And what, pray tell, you ask might that be? Well, brethren, simply put, the voicemail indicated to me that a relative of Harry’s wanted me to have… his Masonic ring. Now, if that’s not affirmation of the afterlife, brethren, I don’t know what is. Continued on Next Page Grand Master of Masons for the State of New JerseyMW Anthony W. 5. Now, brethren, on an entirely different and less somber note, for those of you who are more intimately acquainted with my personal interests, the fact that I am a fan of English actor Matt Smith’s quirky, emotional, and often times serious portrayal of the eleventh incarnation of the “Doctor” in the world renowned BBC television series Doctor Who should come as no surprise to you at all. But perhaps even lesser known to those of you who are more intimately acquainted with my personal interests, is the GREAT appreciation I have for the Writer/Executive Producer of the BBC television series Doctor Who, Steven Moffat. And given the finality of the occasion, I felt it only appropriate that I share with you what I consider to be one of the most powerful and emotionally charged quotes from the series finale of the seventh season of the Smith-era of Doctor Who. The quotes, written by Moffat for the Doctor Who Christmas Special entitled “The Time of the Doctor” (the 800th episode of Doctor Who), which aired on December 25, 2013, are touchingly delivered by Smith during his final moments as the eleventh incarnation of the “Doctor”, and read as follows: “It all just disappears, doesn’t it? Everything you are, gone in a moment; like breath on a mirror.” “Times change and so must I.” “We all change when you think about it. We’re all different people all through our lives. And that’s okay, that’s good, you got to keep moving, so long as you remember all the people that you used to be. I will not forget one line of this, not one day, I swear. I will always remember when…” the Worshipful Master of Euclid Lodge #136 of Free and Accepted Masons was me. And perhaps, brethren, in some strange way… I always will be. P.S. – “And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehendedit not.” - John 1:5-9 (KJV) Your Faithful Humble Servant, Luis A. Torres, Jr. Past Master of Euclid Lodge #136 F. & A.M. Worshipful Master’s Note Freemasonry is NOT a volunteer organization, it is a way of life. And lastly, to my Euclid Lodge #136 of Free and Accepted Masons, I dedicate the following: "She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future." - Proverbs 31:25 (NLT) Your Faithful Humble Servant, Luis A. Torres, Jr. Past Master of Euclid Lodge #136 F.&A.M. ***EUCLID – THE TRADITION CONTINUES***
