  1. Cosmetic effect of knee joint in a knee disarticulation prosthesis Fred A. de Laat, MD, PhD; Mark J. van der Pluijm, CPO; Annette A. van Kuijk, MD, PhD; Jan H. Geertzen, MD, PhD; Leo D. Roorda, MD, PT, PhD

  2. Aim • Assess cosmetic effect of knee joint in knee disarticulation (KD) prosthesis by determining extent of thigh lengthening and shank shortening. • Relevance • Despite advantages, KDs are rarely performed because of anticipated KD prosthesis fitting problems.

  3. Method • Thigh lengthening and shank shortening in 18 knee joints were measured by experimental setup using laser techniques.

  4. Results • Thigh lengthening: • Varied between 23 and 92 mm. • Polycentric knees Medi KH6 and Medi KFM1 showed least lengthening. • Shank shortening: • Varied between 3 and 50 mm. • Polycentric knees Teh Lin Prosthetic & Orthotic Co. Ltd Graph-Lite and Medi KP5 showed least shortening.

  5. Conclusion • With global 25 mm lengthening of thigh and 10 mm shortening of shank, cosmetic argument for avoiding KDs is no longer valid.
