Clovis: 480s AD Charlemagne: 700s AD Christian Kings • Late 700s AD- The Franks reach the height of their power • Brilliant warrior and a strong king • His empire included all of what is now France, stretching into modern Germany, Austria, Italy, and Northern Spain. • He conquered parts of the former Roman Empire. • Pope Leo III, named him emperor of the Romans (showed a return to greatness of the Roman Empire) • Frankish leader • Conquered much of Gaul, or what is now modern day France • Created the strongest Christian Kingdom in Europe • Accomplishments in Education: • Built schools across Europe • Brought scholars to teach at Aachen • Brought the great religious minds of the Middle Ages • Teachings shape Rel./Soc. Life in • Europe for centuries
