  2. Lesson 8 Theme: Prefixes That Mean “not” or “the opposite of” • Knowing the meanings of prefixes can help you uncover the meanings of unknown words. A large number of prefixes mean “not” or “the opposite of.” • Some of these prefixes are non-, ir-, un-, mal-, anti-, de-dis- in-, op-, and il-. • Be careful, though. Not all words that begin with these letter combinations have the meaning of the prefix.

  3. noncommittal • Part of Speech: adjective • Definition: giving no clear indication of attitude or feeling • Sentence: Even though both of the young man’s friends tried to persuade him agree with them, he remained noncommittal and would not take sides on the argument.

  4. Irrational • Part of Speech: adjective • Definition: lacking mental clarity, understanding, or reason • Sentence:James’ anxiety and anger over the situation caused him to become irrational, and he couldn’t think clearly.

  5. Unabridged • Part of Speech: adjective • Definition: the most complete example in its class, not based on a larger version • Sentence: Even though it was much more detailed and much longer, the class read the unabridged version of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

  6. Malfunction • Part of Speech: verb • Definition: to not operate correctly, not be in action • Sentence: Mrs. Tate was worried that the sound system would malfunction during the Homecoming assembly.

  7. Antidote • Part of Speech: noun • Definition: something that counteracts or relieves the effects of poison or other unpleasant elements • Sentence: The entire country is desperately hoping that scientists will find an antidote for the deadly Ebola virus.

  8. Detach • Part of Speech: verb • Definition: to separate from something else • Sentence: The Superman actor wore a cape that he could easily detach when he finished wearing the costume.

  9. Disoriented • Part of Speech: adjective • Definition: confused • Sentence: The victim of the plane crash was very disoriented when he climbed from the rubble.

  10. Incompetent • Part of Speech: adjective • Definition: lacking qualifications, unable to function properly • Sentence: The judge was deemed incompetent to rule over the trial after he had a mental breakdown one morning.

  11. Oppose • Part of Speech: verb • Definition: to be against; resist • Sentence:Those who do not oppose to going the game, raise your hand.

  12. Illegible • Part of Speech: adjective • Definition: not readable • Sentence:The athlete’s signature was illegible because he wrote so quickly.
