  13. Instructor Welcome to Student • Welcome to Introduction to Statistics. My name is ________ and I will be your instructor for this course. I have been teaching introductory statistics since 1998, to both large classes and individuals. I find teaching very rewarding. I enjoy working with my students, guiding them through the concepts of statistics. I also use statistics every day in my work, as a statistician at an educational software company in the Bay Area. I started studying statistics nine years ago in Scotland, where I had a wonderful teacher who made statistics come alive. I spent one year studying statistics at the University of Cambridge in England, before I moved to America to study in the Department of Statistics at the University of California, Berkeley. Even though I have officially stopped studying, I constantly find new ways to apply the knowledge I have, and gain new insights into these methods. • Statistics is all about data. It answers important questions such as how to gather data, summarize data, analyze data and report your conclusions. This course introduces you to the basic statistical concepts and analyses. You will find the ideas and methods in this course very useful in such diverse areas as business, economics, medicine, education, engineering, and manufacturing, just to name a few. • Please do not hesitate to ask me for help and guidance. While you participate in this course I hope I can pass on to you some of my enjoyment and, at the very least, a generous chunk of knowledge about statistics. • This is who I am • I know who you are • This is why you can believe what I am telling you
