  1. Eutrophication L.O. 1) Know that this is a problem caused by too much nitrogen! 2) Be able to describe who it causes problems for.

  2. Eutrophication • Death of aquatic life caused by increased nitrate levels in water • Nitrates can come from two sources - Artificial fertilisers used by farmers - Nitrates from animal waste ( faeces and urine) or feed ( silage)

  3. Eutrophication • Importance to you: Effect of agriculture on environment Can cause “pollution” – death of fish • An examiners favourite • Usually worth lots of marks • A sequential event – examiners love to get you to put stages in order

  4. Outline of how Eutrophication works

  5. Eutrophication • How farmers get it wrong…. • Too much nitrate fertilizer • Apply nitrate fertilizer just before heavy rain • GIVES FARMERS A BAD IMAGE AS ENVIROMENT SPOILERS

  6. What you need to do! • Either a cartoon stripe detailing all the stages in Eutrophication • OR • A poster warning farmers how Eutrophication occurs and telling them how to prevent it.

  7. Jaws

  8. Jaws • In the stream in Mrs Swinson’s garden a trout called Jaws was washed in in one flood • He lived there for a year growing larger and larger • Just when Mr Swinson was contemplating buying a fishing rod _ early June • The stream went cloudy brown • The next morning Jaws was floating belly up- and all the little fish in the stream too • Why??
