  4. Step 1: Gather Baseline Energy Consumption Data

  5. Developing a Sustainable Campus • Highly Efficient Buildings approaching net zero energy • Onsite Renewable Power Generation Capacity > 8 MW • PV arrays rated at 4.6 MW • Research turbines 10+ MW • Renewable Fuel Heating Plant rated at 2.5 MW thermal output • Alternatively Fueled Vehicle Fleet Development Priorities • Safe, secure and sustainable • Iconic facilities • LEED Platinum/Gold certified facilities • Carbon neutral • Highly efficient, near-net zero energy buildings • Living Laboratory

  6. RSF Complex • RSF Total 360,000 sq. ft., 1,325 occupants • RSF Opened July 2010 • 820 occupants • RSF1 Roof PV installed and operational • Visitor parking lot PV installed and operational • RSF2 Construction complete, move in Dec 11 • Parking garage in construction • Spring 2012 completion

  7. RSF Net-Zero Boundary

  8. Photovoltaic System 408 KW 449 KW 1,156 KW 524 KW • Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) provides full rooftop array on RSF 1 • Zero energy = building, parking lot and future parking garage arrays (2537 kW)

  9. Ground Mounted - NREL Mesatop PV • 720 kW (1200 MWh) single-axis tracking, ~ 5 acres • 20-year PPA contract (utilizing Western) • 20-year easement • RECs sold to Xcel Energy for RPS solar set-aside (20 year contract) • PPA price equal to or less than utility electricity prices (based on EIA projections) • Operational December 2008 • Additional PV projects installed include 1.2 MW single axis tracking at NREL NWTC, 100 kW roof mount and RSF PV
