  2. Warm-Up: Dynastic Cycle 5) A period of follows • A new arises The Dynastic Cycle 4) The dynasty . 2) The new dynasty rules. What things unusually occur? 3) Reasons the dynasty grows weak:

  3. The Final Dynasty: Qing Dynasty Following the Han dynasty, the dynastic cycle continued replacing the government with new dynasties until the Manchus in northeast China grew in strength. Under the leadership of Nurhachi, the Manchus invaded the Central Plain and finally founded the Qing Dynasty(1644- 1911). The two most famous emperors of the Qing Dynasty were Emperor Kangxi (r. 1661-1772) and Emperor Qianlong (r. 1735-1796). The Kangxi and Qianlong reign periods were known as the "times of prosperity". However, the Revolution of 1911 ended the rule of the Qing Dynasty. • Highlight the event which led to the end of the Qing Dynasty. • Why do you think this was the last dynasty to ever rule China?

  4. The Final Dynasty: Qing Dynasty

  5. WHAT COMES NEXT? After a series of revolts from 1905 – 1911, the Manchu government abdicated in exchange for protection of the royal family. Without a dynasty to continue the cycle, there was a vacuum of power in China. On May 4, 1919, the anger and frustration of the people erupted into an open demonstration. This was the beginning of the Communist Party run by Mao Tse-Tung (sometimes spelled Zedong) and the Nationalist Party by Chiang Kai-shek. • Which of the following best describes nationalism: • Extreme pride in one’s country. • Rebelling against unfair government laws • Which of the following best describes communism: • The government has people vote for their leaders. Businesses are privately owned. • The government or the whole community owns these land, businesses, etc. Everyone is supposed to share the wealth that they create.

  6. CHINESE CIVIL WAR Over the next ten years, from 1927 to 1936 the two sides fought. Mao Zedong led peasants and common people in uprisings against the Nationalists. At the same time Chiang Kai-shek tried to put down the uprisings and eliminate Mao and the CPC Army. In 1931, the Japanese began invading China. The Communist Party fought against the Japanese, but the Nationalist Party fought the Communists. In 1934, Mao and the CPC army had to retreat from the Kuomintang. They went on a series of long marches that lasted an entire year, from October of 1934 to October of 1935. They traveled around 7,000 miles. • Provide a #hashtag summary of the information from this section: # # • Provide an analogy (a comparison of one thing with another thing that has similar features) for the term civil war.

  7. CHINESE CIVIL WAR When WWII was over, civil war broke out again. The communists were heavily funded by the Soviet Union and quickly gained support in the rural areas. For the first few years the United States tried to negotiate a peace between the two sides however, neither side was willing to give in. By 1948 the CPC was gaining momentum. They continued to take nationalist cities and, with each victory, they were gaining support within the population of China. In October of 1949, the CPC captured Beijing. They declared victory and said that China was now under the rule of the People's Republic of China. The Kuomintang fled to the island of Taiwan where they established their own government called the Republic of China. To this day, both China and Taiwan claim to be the legitimate ruling government of China. • Why would the Soviets support Mao and his party? • What prediction can you make about future relations between Taiwan and China?
