  4. Last week… • You all did a really good job on working out your own budgets • This is called a personal budget • What do you think a national budget is?

  5. Tax and the National Budget • Guess how much the UK Government has to spend this year? £700,000,000,000!!!!!!!!! (that’s 700 Billion pounds!)

  6. Public Spending and Taxes • The Government is in charge of public spending… • We pay for it through taxes… • Business Tax • Income Tax • Value Added Tax (VAT) • Council Tax

  7. What is TAX spent on? Hospitals? Social Services?

  8. How much would one operation cost in a hospital? How is it paid for?

  9. Who pays tax?People’s wages? Businesses?

  10. Should we spend more or less on schools?

  11. 5 Groups…. • Your group: • NHS • Education • Defence (the army etc.) • Welfare (Benefits etc.) • Pensions

  12. On the paper.. • Discuss how important your service is in the UK and what percentage of the total budget should be spent on you.
