  1. ArchChive Design Prototype for a web-based design collaboration tool for architects/designers Thesis Project Anjali AroraMay 3, ‘05

  2. What is my thesis about? • Information Aesthetics: Making data meaningful; informing as well as moving the user. • Emotional design/aesthetics + information design = possible in a business context?? • User experience experiments

  3. Why Emotional Design? Aesthetics matter: attractive things work better- Don Norman • Affect changes the operating parameters of cognition: positive affect enhances creative, breadth-first thinking whereas negative affect focuses cognition, enhancing depth-first processing, almost tunnel vision…. • Good design means that beauty and usability are in balance.

  4. Why Emotional Design-2 Again from Don Norman: • Affect makes us smart, that's the lesson of my current research into the role of affect. • In the quest for enhancement of life, let us not be usability bigots. Yes, products must be usable. But…….

  5. Why Emotional Design:3 It makes business sense too: • IDEO redefined good design by creating experiences, not just products. Now it's changing the way companies innovate.. From “The Power of Design’, Business Week, May 17, ‘04 • Logical and precise, left-brain thinking gave us the Information Age. Now comes the Conceptual Age - ruled by artistry, empathy, and emotion. From ‘Revenge of the right-brain’, Wired Feb 2005

  6. What is ArchChive • It is a web-based collaboration tool designed especially for architects / designers. • It enables sharing & archiving of files & documents in one central web-space. • It enables annotation of drawings, sketches & other files. One can attach text, audio, or photos to these files.

  7. What is ArchChive 2 • Enables visualization of information through vizDoc. • vizDoc is the heart of my thesis project wherein I am exploring visualizations of data couple meaningful information with evocative & emotional design.

  8. Why architects / designers These professions typically demand a blend of artistic & scientific thinking, and would be an ideal testing ground for visualizations I have in mind: combining of emotional, evocative design into practical concerns of showing meaningful information.

  9. Comparison with other apps

  10. The prototype • Let’s see the prototype at work http://www.artbrush.net/archchive/
