UsingLayersinPhotoshop–aComprehensiveBeginners’Tutorial EveryimageinPhotoshopismadeoflayers,andthemannerinwhichtheselayersaredesignedandthenstackedtogetheriswhatgivestheimageitsappearanceandappeal.Assuch,usinglayersinPhotoshopshouldbecommonknowledgeforeveryPhotoshop users. • HereisabriefbutcomprehensivePhotoshopbeginnertutorialonhowtouselayerinPhotoshop. • The layer panel • ThelayerspanelinPhotoshopnotonlygivesyouaccesstothelayers,butitalsocomeswithawiderangeoffeaturesthatmakemanipulatinganddesigningtheselayerssimple.Itallowsyoutocreate,design,andre-designlayersinadditiontootherthingssuchas: • Creating a newlayer • Youmayfinditnecessarytoaddanewlayertoanimageinordertoachievecertaineffectsandappearances.Thiswill requireyoutocreateanewlayer. • Therearetwowaystodothis–clickontheupperrightcornerofthelayerpanelandfromtheresultingmenu select“newlayer”.

Orsimply clickonthe“newlayer”iconlocated atthe bottomofthelayerspanel. • Duplicatingalayer • Youcanalsoduplicateanexistinglayertohavetwosimilaronesquicklyandeasily.Just right-clickon thelayeryouwish toduplicateand thenselect“duplicatelayer”fromtheresultingmenu.Here,youhaveanoptionofaddingthelayertothesameimageoranotherimage–to addtothesameimagesimplygiveit a name andselect “okay.”

If,however,youwishtoaddthelayertoadifferentimage,typethetitleofthatdocumentinthe boxtitled“destination”and giveit a name beforeclicking“okay.” • Alternating the layers’ positionsontheimage • Whenworkingonanimage,thedifferentlayersinPhotoshopmakingupthatimagearearrangedinorderoftheirposition–fromtheoneatthetoptothebackgroundlayer.Youcanalternatethepositioningoftheselayersbysimplyclickingononelayeranddraggingiteitherontoporbelow oftheotherlayers,dependingonyourintended outcome. • Hiding or deleting a layer • Itmaybecomenecessarytohidealayerandobservetheimagewithoutitordeletethelayeraltogetherifitisundesirable. • Tohidealayer,locateitonthelayerpanelandclickontheeyeiconbesideit–clickonthesameicontomakeitvisible again.

Todeletealayer,simplyclickonthatlayeranddragittothetrashiconlocatedatthebottomofthelayerspanelorright-clickthatlayerand selectdelete. • Changingalayer’smode • Youcanalsochangealayer’smodetomanipulateitsappearanceandfeel/texture.Tochangethemode,locatethetablabeledopacityonthelayersmenu–clickontheothertab labeled“normal”ontheleftsideoftheopacitytab.Thiswillopenadrop-downmenuwithnumerousmodestochoosefrom–justclickonthe desiredmodeto applyit.

  5. Changing a layer’s color • Whenyouright-clickonalayer,theresultingmenuofferseveraloptions,amongthemtheabilitytochangethelayer’scolortoseveralothercolorshighlightedbynameandbythecolor–simply clickon yourpreferred colorto changethatparticularlayer’s color.

  6. Adjusting a layer’s transparency • Alayeronanimagedoesnothavetobeopaque–itcanbepartiallytransparenttomakethe layerbeneathitvisible,evenifonlypartially.Toincreasealayer’stransparencyoropacity, simplyadjusttheopacitypercentagefromthelayer’spanel–itislocatedjustabovethe layers. • Adding styles to a layer • Finally,you can adda hostofeffectstoalayerto enhanceits appearance and shape.Simplyclickonthelayeryouwishtoaddeffectstoandthenclickontheiconlabeled“fx”atthebottomofthelayerspanel.Thiswillopenamenuwithawiderangeofeffectstoapply–just clickonthe desired effect.
