  1. ACCESS for ALL What does THAT mean? Why are WE here?

  2. Some Quick Thoughts • ACCESS means you can go in or through. • ACCESS means you are ALLOWED • ACCESS means to have the chance to grow as well as take a tumble now and then.  To be allowed to climb the stairs—both ways!!

  3. . • ACCESS may be scary—but—for whom is it scary? • ACCESS means we can expect the door to opportunity will be open.  It means I don’t need to wonder if I will be “allowed”. • ACCESS means I get a fair chance to grow even more than people might think.

  4. . • ACCESS means you think I can handle success as well as failure—or—at least you are giving me a chance to learn how to handle failure so that I am not denied ACCESS to becoming stronger and more resilient. • Through ACCESS I can learn to persevere—there is always another day—another way—another open door.

  5. . • How far can I see?  Not very if I am denied ACCESS.  The door is closed.  I can only see what is in my room—not what is out there in my community-the world. • ACCESS means I get a chance to make friends, for real • ACCESS means others get to know me too.

  6. . • WOW!  It means I am a part of the whole community of students.  I am a part of the general ALL of my school, my family, my community.

  7. Why are we here? • To be members of a stronger team—we are here for the students we serve and to serve them well—through our shared knowledge and experience. • It takes a team to provide a great educational program.

  8. So, how does the Charting the Cs: Cross Categorical Conference fit in here? • It brings together team members serving our Low Incidence categorical students. • Our charge—as educators—is to find ways to help students become more successful and to advocate for them to be included—to not be denied ACCESS.  To be headed in the same direction as the rest of the student body (ALL). Even when we think of ‘standards’.

  9. . • We have protective feelings about students with disabilities.  It is truly a challenge for us to turn our thinking to ACCESS—not ‘denied’ because of a disability. • One person alone on that team may not be able to meet the challenges of assuring ACCESS.

  10. . • You are friends-colleagues.  Learning from each other—feeling comfortable to mention good ideas/strategies, even though you are not THE expert.  Keep the team strong by sharing the turf—by encouraging and respecting each other to share the turf. Hey, let’s make a ‘lawn’.

  11. ; • The Cs referenced in Charting the Cs actually are: • Communication • Collaboration • Cooperation
