19th century Latin American and 20th century Sub-Saharan African emergences of nation-states differed in the social obstacle to independence, as Latin America tended to struggle greater with social class distinctions while Sub-Saharan Africa tended to struggle with tribalism. However, they were ultimately more similar due to the fact that culturally both areas were influenced by Enlightenment ideals from Europe or the U.S. and that politically they were largely unpleased by distant European imperialist rule.
