  2. Forests in America Today • 738 million acres of forestland. • 1/3 is non-commercial • Not suitable for economical tree production • Swamps, mountains, parks, game refuges

  3. Commercial forestland • 2/3 is commercial • Capable of producing economically useful forests. • However, one-half of this is not available for use. • Near homes, along rivers, not managed for wood production

  4. Commercial Forestland • Owned by private individuals, government,and forest products industries. • Tree farms: Forestland used to produce timber.

  5. Michigan Forests • Total area in thousands of acres: • 36,364 Total Forest area in thousands of acres: 19,270 53% forestland

  6. Who manages our forests? • Department of Natural Resources • Michigan Forest Association: Private group promoting education and wise use of forests in Michigan. • US Department of Agriculture

  7. Forest Regions in the US • 6 major forest regions • Based on climate, soil type and altitude. 1. West Coast Forests: along Pacific Ocean Largest supplier of lumber and softwood plywood. • Western Forests: Pine • Central Hardwood Forests: Pine, Cedar, Birch
