  2. BACKGROUND • Previously under the control of the United Kingdom • Formerly the Trucial States of the Persian Gulf, in 1971 six states formed an alliance to create the United Arab Emirates • Until 2010, it had no formal legislative system • Affairs were handled by necessary parties involved

  3. HISTORY • The Portuguese take control in the 16th century • Vasco de Gama discovered the land while looking for a spice route to Asia • They maintained control for 150 years • British expeditions and raids in the area eventually led them to take control • This region became known as the “Pirate Coast” • In an attempt to stop the raids and not engage in hostile action, the sheikhs signed a treaty in 1853 allowing the British to take control of their settlement

  4. SIZE AND STRUCTURE • It is currently the 115th largest country at 83 600 square feet • There is no water located within the country but it has an impressive coastline • It is largely a desert climate but cooler in the north eastern mountains • Plentiful supply of petroleum and natural gas

  5. SIZE AND STRUCTURE • Frequent sand storms • Strategically located along the Strait of Hormuz, which is a vital transit point for trading crude oil

  6. ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS • The United Arab Emirates belongs to the following green organizations • Bio-Diversity, Climate Change, Kyoto Protocol, Endangered Species Watch, and Ozone Layer Protection • It has also signed, but not ratified, The Law of the Sea

  7. THE PEOPLE • Known as the Emirati • The official language is Arabic • Current population: 5 314 317 • Increase in growth yearly is 3.055% • Primary population lives in Abu Dhabi or Dubai • Unemployment rate is 12.1%

  9. GOVERNMENT • Independence Day: December 2, 1971 • Executive Branch • Prime Minister • Vice President • Cabinet • Council of Ministers appointed by the Prime Minister • Interesting fact: political parties are not allowed!

ECONOMY • Open economy (free market system) • Very high per capita income • High annual trade surplus • Oil was discovered just over 30 years ago • This led to a drastic change from a floundering under developed nation to the world power house we know today • Foreign investors like the idea of a Free Trade Agreement with the US

ECONOMY • UAE is looking to expand its industry as soaring oil prices in 2009 constricted the economy and placed Dubai severely in debt • Their strategic plan in the next few years is to focus on diversification and creating more opportunities for nationals through education and private sector investment

  12. THE NUMBERS • GDP- $360.1 billion • GDP per capita- $48 800 • GDP by sector • Services- 45.3% • Industry- 53.9% • Population below poverty- 19.5%

  13. INDUSTRIES • Petroleum, petro-chemicals, fishing, aluminum, cement, fertilizers, and commercial ship repairs and construction • Oil • Production- 2.813 million bbl/day • Consumption- 545 000 bbl/day • Exports- 2.395 million bbl/day • Imports- 235 300 bbl/day • BBL = one barrel unit of oil

  14. TRANSPORTATION • 42 airports • 25 with paved runways • 5 heliports • 458 km of pipeline with the ability to carry refined gas • 61 merchant marine docks • 3 bulk carrier, 13 cargo, 8 chemical tanker, 7 container, 1 liquefied gas, 1 passenger, and 24 petroleum containers

OTHER POINTS TO CONSIDER • There is no form of conscription in the UAE • Boundary agreements have been signed and ratified with Oman but the details have not been published (2003) • They are on good terms still • UAE and Iran dispute the Tunb Islands and Abu Musa Islands • Iran currently occupies this land • UAE has taken no action towards Iran • Because of its proximity to South Asia, the UAE is susceptible to drug trafficking and money laundering
