SCHEDULE • 8:35-9:00- Morning Work • 9:00-11:25- Language Arts (Phonics, Reading, Spelling, Writing) • 11:25-11:55- Lunch • 11:55-12:10- Review • 12:10-12:50- Specials • 12:50-2:00- Mathematics • 2:00-2:15- Snack • 2:14-2:35- Recess • 2:35-3:05- Social Studies/ Science • 3:05-3:20- Clean-up and prepare for dismissal

  3. GRADING SCALE • 95-100- O= OUTSTANDING • 80-94= S= SATISFACTORY • 70-79- N= NEEDS IMPROVEMENT • 69-BELOW= U= UNSATISFACTORY

  5. SPELLING • Students will be taught word family chunks to help them with spelling and reading strategies. • Students will learn how to sort their spelling words based on the word family chunks. • Spelling words should be studied every night….say the word, spell the word, say the word again.

  6. GRAMMAR • SENTENCES • QUESTIONS • ABC ORDER • CAPITIZATION • PUNCTUATION • NOUNS • VERBS • DESCRIBING WORDS

  7. READING • Students will be placed in reading groups to meet their needs. • Developmental Reading Assessments (DRAs) will be given 3 times a year to monitor each student’s reading progress. • New sight words will be introduced each week to increase vocabulary. • Reading everyday will improve fluency, vocabulary and reading comprehension. • A vocabulary and reading assessment will be given at the end of each story.

  8. READING STRATEGIES Use these quick and easy strategies to help your child when he/she is stuck on a word. • Look at the picture for clues. • Say the first sounds. (Read & say it again) • Stretch the word out. Put the sounds together. • Chunk the word: Look for word chunks or a word part • Skip the word. Read to the end. Hop back and read it again. • Try the word again. • Ask for help after you have tried the other strategies.

  9. WRITING • Daily writing journals. • Sentences, stories, letters • Teachers will model good writing strategies. • Students will learn to use the classroom word and detective word walls in their daily writings. • Students will add new words to their student dictionaries each week.

  10. MATH • Writing and recognizing numbers 1 to 100 • Basic addition and subtraction facts • Measurement • Money • Time • Shapes • Fractions • Skip counting by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s

  11. SCIENCE • Using our senses • Sinking and floating • Weather • Life Cycles (plant and animals) • Investigations skills

  12. SOCIAL STUDIES • Being a good citizen: Following the rules • Famous people …..George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Benjamin Franklin, Christopher Columbus • Map skills • Wants and needs

  13. HOW CAN YOU HELP YOUR CHILD AT HOME? • Read with your child every night. • Practice writing and recognizing numbers 1 to 100. • Practice reading and writing the spelling words every night. • Review previously taught spelling and sight words. • Make sure your child goes to bed at reasonable time each night.
