It is important that your child attend school every day. • If you need to schedule doctor appointments please try to do this outside of school hours. • Remember to keep your child’s medical notes rather than turn them into the office or teacher(there is a clear pocket in the agenda, that is a great place to keep those notes). • If your child does not attend 50% of a school day, he/she will be marked absent.

  4. MAC Behavior Expectations Follow Instructions Take responsibility for own actions; demonstrates self-control Completes and submits quality classwork Listens respectfully and acknowledges the thinking of others Displays best effort Uses technology in accordance with school policies

  5. Each teacher has their own way to reward positive behavior: • Various methods used in each classroom such as; team points, Class DoJo. Treasure box, etc. • Make sure to check and initial your child’s agenda each night

  7. As of September 3rd you may have lunch with your child in the cafeteria. We ask that you only have your child sit with you in the designated area.   8. Portfolios This year we have portfolios as a from of communication. In the portfolios you will see both formative and summative assessments. Formative assessments will be in the pocket of the portfolio. These may be taken out and kept at home. Summative assessments will be located in the rings of the portfolio. These need to stay in the portfolio.

  9. Please have your child to school on time each day. Our school day begins at 8:15am. • School wide, we will have MAC time from 8:30-9:00am. • During this time, students may rotate to other 1st grade classrooms for differentiated, intensive instruction as well as focuses on reading skills.

  10. Phonics First We have adopted a new phonics curriculum this year. This curriculum has new sight words that are called red words. We will teach them throughout the year. The words need to be known by sight, spelled correctly as well as used correctly in a sentence.

  11. Homework is at the discretion of the individual teacher and classroom. If a student needs more practice on a skill then work will be sent home with the child. We do ask that you read with your child each night for 15-20 minutes & complete the reading log.

  12. McKeel Academy Central Assessments are all Standard Based Assessments with a grading system of a 4, 3, 2, or 1. We communicate the Formative and Summative Assessments through the portfolio. Summative Assessments featured in the Portfolio are Language Arts, Math & Science.

  13. Standard Based Grading is as follows: • 4 – Proficient • 3 – Developing Progess • 2 – Beginning Progress • 1 – Of Concern

  15. Accelerated Reader (AR) • Read in class and/or read at home • Take Quizzes • Earn Points • Meet Your Goal • AR Reward each 9 weeks

  17. Please make sure you have filled out a volunteer form. A new form MUST be filled out each school year. All volunteer forms are due by September 13th. You may complete the application online for each member of your family that will attend a trip or help in the classroom.

  18. First grade field trips will be scheduled throughout the year… just a few we are planning are: The Lakeland Police Department, Lakeland Community Theatre, Munn Park, & Grace Manor Nursing Home * Updates to come home soon!

  19. The Lakeland Police Department First grade will be doing a community service field trip to the Lakeland Police Department. In effort to show our gratitude we are working on a few gifts to take to share with the officers at the station. We would like to put together care packages & this is where we need your help! We are asking for donations of: Lifesavers, Starburst, Paydays, Hersey Kisses, Double Bubble Gum, Tootsie Rolls, Peppermints, Snickers, Mounds

  20. First Grade will have fundraisers to help cover the costs of field trips throughout the school year. • Otis Spunkmeyer Cookie Dough • October 21-November 4 • Holiday Shop • Month of December
