  2. Introduction • Windows 2003 Server is the product of two and a half years of improvements on the Windows 2000 Server. • Microsoft focused on improving reliability, availability, scalability, and security which makes Windows 2003 Server a more dependable product.

  5. Windows 2003 Server Family This Microsoft server is available in several editions, each is dedicated to a particular area of need. These include: • Small Business Server • Web Edition • Standard Edition • Enterprise Edition • Datacenter Edition

  8. Reliability and Availability • W/S 2003 family provides availability through enhanced clustering support. Server cluster is a key feature in W/S 2003 - this feature enable more flexibility in the way multi- site clusters can be managed - provide greater failover capabilities (if a node in the cluster becomes unavailable, another node node in the cluster immediately beginning providing service)

Security Microsoft has the reputation of being "wide - open" by default What does this mean? • insecure file system • insecure internet Browser (Trust worthy or secure internet Computer) Microsoft has come up with a new formula SD3+c • Secure by Design - software that contains no security vulnerabilities • Secure by Default-there are as few permissions given as possible • Secure by Deployment - Measurements that are taken to verify that the system stays secure while running on a corporate network. This entails detecting breaches, reporting them to take corrective action. • Communication – (1) how information patches and security flaws and sent to costumers, (2) how well corrective information is understood.

Security - Wizards • improved wizards are used to open up software, when you are doing downloads • Everything is closed up tight or zipped, Wizards accompany the new security architecture and are seen as helpful aids with very detailed instructions to direct you though what you are needing to do

Security • Microsoft has reviewed every line of coding underlying the W/S 2003 family to ensure that there is no possible fail points and exploitable weaknesses. •  Default Access Protection (NAP) • New Architecture to isolate connecting computers until their Health can be verified. Protects the client and server Architecture.

  12. Scalability • Window Server 2003 supports technologies such as NUMA-( Non- Uniform Memory Architecture) and hyperthreading. These features allow the w/s 2003 to be partitioned like a mainframe; this has helped in the performance of key servers.

  21. Volume Shadow Copy • AKA point-in-time archives • Stores snapshots of files • Lets you access and recover older versions of files on the network after they’ve been changed or deleted • Users can restore files without administrator help • Requires more disk space

User Friendliness • Win 2003 server makes existing features from Win 2000 easier and more accessible • Installation and setup is a trivial task • OS is automatically locked down • Option: Quick Format on a new partition • Wizards for installing new hardware and software • Installations are a single step procedure

  23. Limitations • Windows does not interact well with a lot of existing programs, including older versions of software from Microsoft • Example: You cannot use MS Exchange 2000 with Windows 2003 Server; it must be MS Exchange 2003 • Price to upgrade

Do you need Windows 2003 Server? • It depends on what server you are currently using. • Windows 2000 operators – Windows 2003 does not provide any fundamental changes in features except the IIS 6.0 feature. • Windows NT operators – Windows provides numerous enhancements that are not available in the NT version.
