  3. Germany returns Alsace-Loraine to France • Had previously gained this territory in the Franco-Prussian War

  4. The Mandate System • Central Powers forced to give up their colonial holdings • Ottoman Empire only retains Turkey, carved up and lost land in Southwest Asia • Created mandates rather than independent nations • Britain: Palestine and Iraq • France: Syria and Lebanon
