Jongo da Serrinha • JONGO DA SERRINHA is a group that emerged from the movement to preserve and spread jongo, a rhythmic art brought from Angola by slaves that is one of the forebears of samba and an Afro-Brazilian cultural heritage fundamental in forming the country’s popular music. • Jongo da Serrinha, besides being largely responsible for preserving this tradition, also has a broader cultural importance, promoting community uplift and educational activities through its own NGO, Grupo Cultural Jongo da Serrinha, helping more than 650 low-income children and youths. • Because of the importance of this cultural manifestation to the country, Jongo da Serrinha in December 2003 received the Federal Medal of Cultural Merit. • Jongo da Serrinha is a history of success.

  4. Narrative A film is a dream. And like in dreams, the images that remain from our childhood are the most vivid, those that bring us the most emotion and continue to enrich our lives. It cannot be any different in this short film. A real history, a document on the lives of a group of children, youths and elderly who dream and who through their cultural expression manage to overcome the hardships of daily existence, previously marked by slavery and today, a mere century later, marked by urban violence. This short, then, is the opposite of the recent movie Cidade de Deus (City of God), intending to show the other side of Rio de Janeiro’s favelas, a side rich with culture, education and life. Beautiful flowing and sensual images, backed with an ear-opening musical soundtrack. An exaltation of the beauty of life.
