Warm-Up August 14, 2013 • Find you seat QUIETLY • Remember there is no talking during warm-ups • Copy down the agenda for the day and homework into the S.S. section of your agenda. • Warm-Up • What are the key physical features of the Coastal Plains? Why are they important to this region? • Why type of soil is found in the Coastal Plains region? • Describe the climate of the Coastal Plains region. • What type of economy makes up this region?

  2. SS8G1 – The student will describe Georgia with regard to physical features and location. (SS8G1b) – Describe the five geographic regions of Georgia; include the Blue Ridge Mountains, Valley and Ridge, Appalachian Plateau, Piedmont, and Coastal Plain.

  3. Where is the Piedmont? • Central area of Georgia • The most populated region of the state, containing over half of the state’s population. • Contains Georgia’s capital and largest city, Atlanta

  4. Piedmont’s Physical Features: • Rolling hills and valleys • Flatlands • GEORGIA RED CLAY • Chattahoochee River • Georgia’s most important river • Major transportation route that carries cotton and other freight • Furnishes hydroelectric power to factories and mills • Source of drinking water • Fall line • Dramatic drop in elevation that runs through the middle of Georgia. It divides the Coastal Plain and Piedmont. • Contains many waterfalls

  5. Piedmont • Economy: • Granite, textiles, farming, business, airlines, poultry, cattle, cotton, soybeans, wheat • Climate: • Hot summers/mild winters

  6. Piedmont • Major Cities: • Atlanta, Athens, Augusta • Famous Sites: • Stone Mountain, Georgia Aquarium, CNN, Coca-Cola Museum
