  2. Importance of Indian Handmade Carpets Indian Carpets are renowned all over the world for their exquisite designs, subtle elegance, attractive colours and workmanship. Hand-knotted Woollen Carpets from India speak eloquently of the superb workmanship. India produces all types of qualities with specific designs, colours and sizes as per requirement of world market and have an edge to produce carpets according to the specification of buyer with timely delivery schedule. The art of weaving carpet has percolated down through generations and the Indian craftsmen have been creating the greatest of specimen since the medieval period.

INDIAN HANDMADE CARPET INDUSTRY • Indian Handmade Carpet Industry is an Employment oriented, Rural based Cottage Industry which provides employment to more than 2.5 Million artisans & weavers. • It is almost 100% Export Oriented. • Average Foreign Exchange earning in last three years is over USD 700 Million per annum. • India ranks No. 1 as a producer and exporter of Handmade carpets & other floor coverings both in terms of volume and value.

India is having market share of around 30% of total world’s exports of Handmade floor coverings; • Indian Handmade Carpets are renowned world over for their exquisite designs, subtle elegance, attractive colors and workmanship. The magnificence of Indian carpets and skill of it’s weavers and artisans has placed India prominently on the International carpet map; • Indian Handmade Carpet Industry produces Tailor made Carpets to suit the need, taste and demand of every segment of the Society; • The direction of exports from India is as under :- USA - 39.25% Germany - 24.01 % Israel - 0.34% Rest of World - 36.40 %

Though exports of Carpets into ISRAEL are not much appreciating & encouraging, as there is a negative growth of 16.4%, but it seems that there is a potential & scope of increasing exports of Handmade Carpets & other Floor coverings to TEL AVIV, being a moderate economy of the country. ISRAEL can be treated as an upcoming market for Indian Hand-made carpets.

India Carpet Expo • The ‘India Carpet Expo’ a flagship event of Carpet Export Promotion Council is a unique forum for all the carpet importers, be it whole-sellers, retailers, departmental stores, interiors-designers or even the architects too. • India Carpet Expo is a biannual carpet fair organized, one in the month of ‘February / March and the other in the month of October by the Carpet Export Promotion Council under the aegis of Govt. of India. • 24th India Carpet Expo (ICE) (and 8th in Varanasi) is scheduled from 12th to 15th October, 2012, at Varanasi, India.
