  1. Healthcare Bridge Program College of Lake County Presented by Ditra Henry and Marcy Thompson

  2. Purpose • Prepare English as a Second Language students to successfully pass the placement exam for the C.N.A. course. • Provide an opportunity for students to enroll and successfully complete the C.N.A. course.

  3. Collaboration • Coordinated with Nursing Department to identify times and days to offer summer C.N.A. course. • College supported the release time of Full-time ESL Faculty to develop curriculum for the ESL Support class for C.N.A. course.

  4. Implementation Timeline • January 2005 - Began recruitment of ESL Students • February 2005 - Offered 12 week Intensive ESL Class • May 2005 – Offered 2 week Back to School Class • June 2005 - Co-enrolled students in C.N.A. course and ESL Support class.

  5. Target Population • English as a Second Language students who scored between 6.0-7.9 on TABE. • Must be an ESL student enrolled in an ESL class at one of the Area Plan program.

  6. Recruitment • Sent letters to students who did not pass the C.N.A. Entrance Exam. • Recruited students in Adult Education ESL Classes through APC Members. • Advertised in local newspapers.

  7. Bridge Program Cohort • 12 week Intensive ESL Course • 2 week Back to School Course • 7 week C.N.A. Course and co-enrolled in ESL Support • CPR Training and Certification The cohort model was scheduled for similar times and days throughout the 21 week program. This schedule provided an opportunity for students to develop a relationship with other students and the faculty. It also provided a consistent schedule for students to make a smooth transition into the vocational training portion.

  9. Funding • Support Services and Staff Coordination funded by ICCB Healthcare Bridge Program. • Full-time Faculty salary funded by College of Lake County’s Educational Fund.

  10. Evaluation • 22 Students Enrolled in Intensive Class • 4 students dropped, but 5 new students were added • 23 Students Enrolled in the C.N.A. Class • 21 Students Completed the C.N.A. Class • 9 Students obtained employment • 12 Students continued education and 3 enrolled in HealthCare Field

  11. Current Standing • Spring 2006 offered ESL Class for students interested in enrolling in the C.N.A. Course for two evenings per week. • No support services available
