  2. Formal Region • Determined by government or administrative boundaries • Cities • States • Countries • Defined by similar characteristics • Great Plains • Rocky Mountain Region • Tropics (countries located near equator)

  3. Functional Region • Serves a purpose that affects places around it. • Distributes goods/people • Serves specific purpose • Cell phones • Newspapers

  4. Perceptual Region • Groups of areas that provoke a certain stereotype or feeling. • Examples: • The South • The Middle East • Chinatown
