  1. The Baccalaureatein Madras College St Andrews

  2. Languages Taught in Madras College • Advanced Higher French • Advanced Higher German • Advanced Higher Spanish • Advanced Higher Latin

  3. Uptake for Baccaulaureate 2 pupils • One looking at the impact of the language on the mood of music • One producing an information brochure for young French people visiting North East Fife

  4. CHALLENGES • Focus for project 1 and how to measure the outcomes • Timescales

  5. BENEFITS • Encourages young people to think about how to approach a piece of research • Encourages them to plan effectively • To set realistic targets and timescales • To build in successful evaluation

  6. It is the one thing, certainly in Modern Languages, that young people do which has the emphasis on the process rather than the outcome.

  7. FinallyWhat our two candidates thought: ‘ I’ve really enjoyed doing my project. All the self-evaluation involved has been especially interesting and useful since in Advanced Highers we rarely get the opportunity to step back and review our work. The freedom allowed by the template of the project has allowed me to cultivate my ideas with independence which will help prepare me for more independent work at university.’

  8. And candidate 2.... ‘Personally I have really enjoyed the flexibility of this project as it has allowed me to combine my two main interests in the form of a project that doesn’t get in the way of my other school subjects. I have thoroughly enjoyed learning so many new skills and discovering new ideas which will be beneficial for future research and studies in university.’
